The God Who Is

But you are…
Nehemiah 9:17b

My Takeaways

Something Old

God is

  • A God of forgiveness
But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 1 John 1:9
  • Gracious
Oh, how generous and gracious our Lord was! He filled me with the faith and love that come from Christ Jesus. 1 Timothy 1:14
  • Merciful
How kind the Lord is! How good he is! So merciful, this God of ours! Psalm 116:5
  • Slow to become angry
He put up with them through forty years of wandering in the wilderness. Acts 13:18
  • Rich in unfailing love
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:4-5

Something New

Never noticed the “gift of the Spirit to instruct” in Nehemiah 9:20. It’s very rare the Spirit is mentioned in the Old Testament, especially in regards to instruction.

  1. God is all these for me…. I have been/am stubborn and willful in my decisions and how I live my life, and, much like the Israelites, I do what I think is best, or what will serve me best, and then when the consequences come, I cry out to the Lord, who is FAITHFUL and who hears my cry and He rescues me… and then again, I do my thing… and cry out… and He rescues. Oh how longsuffering He is … and He never leaves or forsakes me. “You did not abandon them, even when they made an idol shaped like a calf …” (9:17b-18a) “But in your great mercy you did not abandon them to die in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud still led them forward by day, and the pillar of fire showed them the way through the night” (9:19) NEW: The pillars of cloud and fire did not depart when the Israelites sinned. God didn’t stop providing manna from heaven or water …God doesn’t leave us when we sin… Oh I am so thankful for this fact today.

  2. For me today, He is Jehovah Shalom. Experiencing a beautiful late summer day in Indiana. Just seems unusually peaceful with the crickets chirping and a lovely breeze blowing through the leaves in the linden tree outside my window. Just sitting and enjoying!
