RTW December 14

NOTE:  Oops, I said December 13th instead of the 14th.

Great Wealth

Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.
1 Timothy 6:6

My Takeaways

Something Old

Used of the Spirit-filled Christian – having all they need within through the indwelling Christ.

Contentment
“They meant a frame of mind which was completely independent of all outward things, and which carried the secret of happiness within itself. Contentment never comes from the possession of external things.” ~ Barclay

Something New

A consumer of culture cannot be content.

Training in Wealth

1 Timothy 4:6

  • Nourished by the message of faith and good teaching
  • Don’t waste time arguing over godless ideas… know godly teaching to recognize ungodly teaching

  1. My something old and something to do came from 1 Tim 6:6-10. Godliness with contentment is great wealth. If I have food and clothes I am to be content. I have those and so much more. I need to work on being content and put my energies into godliness and not how to get more and have more. The pursuit or riches and money leads to much evil and trouble.

My something new was in 1 Tim 5:22. It says to never be in a hurry to appoint a church leader. I’ve seen this not followed and end badly…love to see how Gods word speaks to real life!

  2. My Takeaways: It’Worth the Labor

Something Old: In todays reading Paul shed some light on topics such as installing Elders and Deacons, providing for widows, and protecting against false teachers and the temptation of worldly riches. Like all of Paul’s writing there was a lot of good stuff in this letter.

    Something New: Timothy 4:7-8
“Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” Practicing spiritual disciplines on a regular basis is of utmost importance. Spiritual maturity does not happen in a day; it occurs slowly. My salvation was a one time event and God already did the work for me. Spiritual growth never stops. It’s something that God and I work on together. He has given me everything that I need to mature spiritually, but He has left the rate at which I grow, up to me. Spiritual maturity is a joint effort. God supplies the tools, while I supply the labor. If I labor well, God has promised to make me adequate for every good work (2 Timothy 3:17). I will discipline myself for the purpose of godliness and let God do the rest.

Something To Do: Invest in the labor in order to progress and grow. Keep up the Spiritual growth with prayer, journaling, quiet time, fasting, retreats, church attendance, reading the Bible etc., etc.

  3. Again there is so much to learn from this letter! Wendy thanks for RTW, as it helps all of us to nourish ourselves and train ourselves to be godly as Paul instructs.

In 1 Timothy 3:16 we find the great mystery of our faith.

In 1Timothy 5:4 I find support and encouragement for an important part of my life right now – caring for aging parents. “…children or grandchildren, their first responsibility is to show godliness at home and repay their parents by taking care of them. This is something that pleases God.” No matter how tired I get, I know I am doing God’s work and it’s a gift of time with my parents that I will never regret.

And the meaning of true wealth is found in 1 Timothy 6:6-10. “True godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.”
