The Right Attitude

You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.
Philippians 2:5

My Takeaways

Something Old

I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. Philippians 3:7-9a

Something New

We demonstrate Biblical humility that promotes unity when we:

  • Focus on the greatest and renown of God, not our own. Jesus was God and had all the privileges of the deity, yet did not hold on those rights or his rightness. His actions always put others first and deflected any glory He received to God. (Philippians 2:6)
  • Serve without seeking attention and gratitude. Jesus took on the nature of a servant. Even though He had power as a leader, He served. He served across cultural, economic, and relational boundaries. (Philippians 2:7)
  • Obey God even when the task seems extreme. Jesus gave His physical life in obedience to God. While, in most causes our obedience will not require the giving of our physical life, humility says, God, I’ll obey even if your call to action seems risky. (Philippians 2:8)

When we lower ourselves and lift Christ, others are drawn to Him.

  1. Beautiful lesson! Good reminder to keep on trying to be “like Jesus” and not to look better myself but just because I love God and that is what Jesus would be doing…. Even though it might cause some discomfort. If I think about what Jesus had to go through for me, than it all of a sudden seems so minor whatever discomfort I may “suffer” by obeying him….

  2. I love Philippians! So much great things in here! Phil 2:5-11 stood out to me fresh today. I want to have Christ’s attitude. He is attitude was to not elevate himself, he sacrifice, he was humble, he was obedient, he have his life. He brought himself low and God elevated him. How much better to have a humble attitude and have God lift me up than to try and lift myself up and have God have to humble me.

    1. My Takeaways: Pride or Humility

Something Old: “Don’t be selfish, don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.” Phil. 2:3 Paul reminded me today that I can’t be self seeking, have self admiration, complain, or argue because these things are the opposite of Christ likeness. They are all symptoms of pride. The number one sin.

Something New: Self-seeking – “Though he was God,…” Jesus took on human likeness. He entered this world, through the womb of a woman and a barn. Ponder that for awhile!
Self-admiration – “…He did not think of equality with God as something to cling to… He took the humble position of a slave.” (2:6-7), Jesus was not an heir of a wealthy family, but a son of a carpenter. He spoke this whole universe into existence, but yet he fell and scraped his knees, worked in a carpenter shop and hammered his thumb on more than one occasion I’m sure. Jesus came not to be served, but to serve and lay down His life for others.
Complaining -Jesus never complained about the life His Father had chosen for Him. People from everywhere demanded His time and resources. The wrong doers unjustly accused Him. He gave Himself freely.
Arguing – “… He humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.” (2:8). Jesus had nothing to prove. He was who He was. He didn’t argue He took a stand. If I allow myself to be full of pride I always think I have something to prove. But if I am humble, I do not. Jesus had the most to boast about, but He never did. He had so much to give up, but did so without complaining or becoming self-seeking. So as Paul says, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (2:5).

Something To Do: Don’t give up on imitating Jesus’ humility in my life today.  Pray to become more like Jesus in some small or significant way each and every day.  Don’t stop the transformation process.  Don’t quench the Spirit.  Let God change me.

  3. Great lesson on humbling ourselves and lifting Christ!

Today I also focused on Paul’s prayer for the Philippians (1:9-11) I am praying this prayer, too, for all members of my family. ??❤️
