What Does The Spirit Do?

And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.
John 16:8

My Takeaways

Something Old

But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him (the Holy Spirit) to you [to be in close fellowship with you].  And He, when He comes, will convict the world about [the guilt of] sin [and the need for a Savior], and about righteousness, and about judgment: about sin [and the true nature of it], because they do not believe in Me [and My message];  about righteousness [personal integrity and godly character] (AMP) John 16:7-10

Something New

  • Convict: declare guilty of sin
  • Confute: to prove the need for a Savior
  • Coach: teach of personal integrity and godly character

Something to Do

Submit to the work of the Spirit.

  1. What a touching and awesome teaching!! Wow indeed! This one ranks in your top three teachings for me this year. I was so hungry for this Word. Thank You Holy Spirit for what You gave me through Wendy’s teaching.

  2. God is so good to give me the encouragement and truth I need each day! Today is Halloween and we have chosen to not have our kids participate in the typical Halloween activities. We feel good about our decision and we will do some fun things as a family this evening. But I have felt the judgement or oddness from the world. The first verses of today’s reading so encouraged me that we’re not supposed to blend in the with the world and that the world will not get why we do or don’t do certain things but it’s important to follow God and His leading not the world. I want to teach my kids this truth so as they grow and face the world and it’s pressures they can stand firm in Gods way even when it’s different or they are hated because if it.

  3. My Takeaways: The Ministry of the Holy Spirit

Something Old: Wozers! That’s what I thought about our reading today . John chapter 16 was amazing!  But then I read John 17 and it was really amazing too – The entire chapter was Jesus praying!  So powerful. I am speechless. I had to keep reading these chapters over, because they spoke to me in such detail. Jesus even remembered to pray for me in chapter 17:20-25. The Holy Spirit is powerful. While Jesus was here on Earth he could only share himself with the people he encountered, now the whole world can have him at their disposal if they so desire. He had to die in order to give me the “Good News.”

Something New: “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in Me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows, but take heart, because I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Todays world is a battleground. Though it appears to have everything I need it really has nothing for me. The enemy is always at work distracting my eyes, the pleasures of my mind, and treasures of my heart. All of this encourages pride, greed, and selfishness. The enemy wants to get my eyes off of the true meaning of life. While this world seems to be for me, it really works against me. Satin wants me to think this world is nothing but a nice safe playground, not the battlefield that it is. But I can overcome this battleground, even though it might take its toll on me. Temptation, tribulation, and persecution will leave me with plenty of battle wounds, but the good news is that I am on the winning side. The enemy I am fighting is a defeated enemy, and my King is a victorious conqueror! Because Christ was victorious, I am also victorious. Because He has overcome the world, His power in me can and will help me to overcome the world. What great peace I have knowing that I can overcome all the troubles this world throws at me.

Something To Do: Pray for peace and more of Jesus in my life. Pray that when trouble comes my way on this battlefield – and it will come – that I will take heart in knowing that Jesus overcame the world.

  4. I am so humbled that Jesus prayed for me in John 17:20!
He prayed that we would all be one. Our world is so divided. I long for that perfect unity with the Father and with all people.
    God’s Love. God’s Peace.
May we love and obey to find unity and peace.
