In Love With The Wrong God

But you say ‘Save your breath, I’m in love with these foreign gods, and I can’t stop loving them now!’
Jeremiah 2:25

My Takeaway

Something Old

Jeremiah 4:3
Plow up the hard ground of your hearts!

Plowing is hard work.

Something New

Cant is translated as hopeless or no hope meaning despair or desperate.

The hopelessness comes when we try to abandon this love, because this love is alluring and runs after you. It described as lust. This kind of love is strong, strong enough to hold you against your will. If a stranger, strange place, or thing has you bound against your will, follow Jeremiah’s rules for restoration and freedom.

Jeremiah 3:12-14

  1.  Come home to the Lord.
  2.  Admit that you rebelled against the Lord.
  3.  Confess that you refused to listen to the Lord’s voice.

Something to Do

Praise God, I have hope!

  1. My Takeaways: Listen!

Something Old: “My heart, my heart,” he cried, “I writhe in pain! My heart pounds within me! I cannot be still… How long must this go on! How long must I see the battle flags and hear the trumpets of War?” (4:19-21). So now I understand what Wendy was talking about yesterday when she said Jeremiah is known as the “Weeping Prophet.” He is so grieved by the fact that the people were rejecting their God. His heart was breaking for what breaks God’s heart. How sad it must have been for Jeremiah to tell a nation of what was to come only to see it fall on deaf ears. Our world today is a lot like Judah, filled with injustice, proverty, war and rebellion against God. All around me I see people leading sinful lives and rejecting the God who loves them dearly . People all around me will suffer for their sinfulness. As a Christian I must show the world what it looks like to be a Christian. In my decision to become a Christian I should be working overtime to be that one witness for God to as many people as I can. I must be faithful to that opportunity. God is committed to preserving those who are faithful to him.
Something New: Jeremiah 5:13-14 “God’s prophets are all windbags who don’t really speak for him. Let their predictions of disaster fall on themselves! Therefore, this is what the Lord God of Heaven’s armies says because the people are talking like this, my messages will flame out of your mouth and burn the people like kindling wood.” We still have two kinds of prophets today. Those who do it for fame, money, prestige and popularity. Telling the people what they want to hear. Misrepresenting God. And those that tell people the God who Is. Who share the God of Scripture. Telling all who will listen about the God who has revealed Himself through His Son Jesus Christ. As a Christian I don’t want to be pursuing the things that pass but the things that last. I want to bring the saving truth of Christ to those who are not able to see the light.

Something To Do: Be a witness for God. Show the world by my actions what it means to be a Christian.
