When We Are In A Tight Spot

The men of Israel saw what tight spot they were in; and because they were hard-pressed by the enemy, they tried to hide in caves, thickets, rocks, holes, and cisterns.
1 Samuel 13:6

My Takeaways

Something Old

We don’t have to hide under a rock, in a cave, thickets, holes or cistern.  When we feel hard pressed, we must remember even though we are hard-pressed, we are not crushed.

2 Corinthians 4:7-9
But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.  We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;  persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. (NIV)

Something New

Our Hard-pressed Hiding Place:

  • The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Psalm 9:9
  •  The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. (NIV)  Psalm 18:2
  • Of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?  (NIV)  Psalm 27:1
  • He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.  (NIV) Psalm 144:2

  1. My Takeaways: Saul is one prideful guy. A very foolish King!

Something Old: Saul is not a good King. First he takes credit for a battle that Jonathan won. Next, Saul refused to wait for Samuel, the Priest, and sacrificed the burnt offering himself. He doesn’t communicate well with his own son. He didn’t allow his soldiers to eat when they needed the strength to fight. They are so famished, that they ate meat with blood. He almost kills his own son! It appears to me that Saul is all about himself and his son Jonathon is all about God. I do believe that Saul’s reign will end exactly as God foretold.

Something New: Saul always had an excuse, he couldn’t keep God’s commandments and he was a great disappointment! God wants a King that is willing to do it God’s way.

Something To Do: Obey the Lord and seek to do His will. Do not miss use the power God has given me. Lead the people God has put me in charge of- my kids, grandkids, students, etc. Don’t be a Saul!
