When is it OK to Question God?

Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.”
Luke 1:34

My Takeaways

Something Old

Four hundred years of silence. I can’t even imagine what it would like to not to hear from God.

Something New

When I am

  • Afraid
  • Confused
  • Hurt
  • Angry
  • Sad

It’s not when I question God, but how I question God.

Zechariah questioned with unbelief. (Luke 1:18)

Mary questions with logic, faith, and wonder. (Luke 1:34)

  • Ask in reverent fear.
  • Ask in remembrance of His holiness.
  • Ask in respect to His Sovereignty.

Something to Do

Question rightly.

  1. Ohmygosh – EVERY DAY in God’s Word… I made it through the entire OT for the first tine EVER! I’m so thankful for this group and this ministry.

I’ve been questioning the Lord ALOT lately – wondering what He is doing in my life and desiring so much to know His will and walk according to it … I’ve found myself in a few “messes” lately, after praying and seeking His will and asking Him to NOT open doors if He doesn’t want me to walk through them. The door opens and it’s a mess inside the room! And yet here I am questioning in the chaos – did I NOT hear you correctly Lord; did You intentionally put me here to learn, or to minister to someone or for some other reason? Or was this my own will? Either way, I remind myself that HE is Sovereign, HE knew I would be here, HE has made a way out, and HE will use this experience to sanctify me and conform me more into HIS image!

New: Matthew’s geneology went forward. Luke’s went backward.

When reading about Mary’s conversation with Gabriel – my though was “HOW did Mary find favor with God? What do I need to do to find favor with God?” Oh this is my ongoing problem – as if I can have anything to do with finding favor with Him. As if I have anything to do with the sanctification process (other than obedience). As if I have anything to do with my salvation. None of it is me … It is all HIM.

Another New: Mary didn’t ASK to be favored. She was just living her life, loving the LORD and waiting to get married. She probably was focused on Him solely (seek first the kingdom of God…) … not trying to gain God’s favor/approval/love. Oh, when will i stop trying to earn His love and favor?
