The Folly Of Idolatry

“Who but a fool would make his own god – an idol that cannot help him one bit?”
Isaiah 44:10

My Takeaways

Something Old

Why do we turn to idols?

  • God isn’t moving fast enough for us.
  • God has disappointed us.
  • Facing times of trial and hardship

Idol holders

  • Are fools (Isaiah 44:10)
  • Will be disgraced (Isaiah 44:11)
  • Display their stupidity and ignorance (Isaiah 44:18)
  • Say to the world “I don’t trust God.” (Isaiah 44:20)

How do get rid of them?

  • Recognize them… ask God to reveal them
  • Remove them… ask God to help
  • Replace them… ask God to be your one and only

Something New

These quotes… wow….

“The idolater chooses a delusion and became deluded.” (J. Alec Motyer)

“The idolater holds it, but in reality, it holds him. He is in bondage to a lie.” (Motyer)

Something to Do

Recognize, remove and replace idols in my life.

  1. Love Isaiah 44:18-19 in regards to Idols.

“Such stupidity and ignorance! Their eyes are closed, and they cannot see. Their minds are shut, and they cannot think. The person who made the idol never stops to reflect, why, it’s just a block of wood! I burned half of it for heat and used it to bake my bread and roast my meat. How can the rest of it be a god? Should I bow down to worship a piece of wood?”

Isaiah 45:1-13 is just amazing! 150 years before Cyrus was even born God knew what would be. After Judah falls to Babylon, Babylon falls to Cyrus. Did you notice in yesterday’s reading 45:1 Cyrus was referred to as God’s anointed. He wasn’t even a Jew, but a Gentile. This is good stuff.

Jesus ministry on earth is foreshadowed in Isaiah 45:14-25 and we see these words repeated again in Roman’s 14:11 and Phil 2:10-11. “Every knee will bend to me, and every tongue will confess allegiance to me.”

Made me think about this worship song
