The Benefits Of Being Wise
If you become wise, you be the one to benefit. If you scorn wisdom, you will be the one to suffer. Proverbs 9:12
My Takeaways
Something Old
When we search for wisdom we find:
- Good judgement (8:12)
- Discernment (8:12)
- Insight and strength (8:14)
- Find wisdom (8:17)
- Joy (8:34)
- Find life (as consisting of earthly felicity combined (often) with spiritual blessedness) (8:35)
- Longer life (9:11)
How to we find it?
Fear of the LORD is the foundation of wisdom. (Proverbs 9:10)
yirah (yir-aw’) to be in awe of and respect deeply
How deeply I respect God is directly related my wisdom.
Something New
Proverbs names a woman, Wisdom, and a woman, Folly… Interesting.
Something to Do
Deeply respect God more and more each day.
My Takeaways: The School of Wisdom
Something Old: Proverbs 9:10 ” Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgement.” Because of my respect for all of God’s power and greatness I will honor Him. Because of my thankfulness for His mercy I will serve Him well. Because God is holly and full of love, I know that His discipline is righteous and just. This inspires enough fear to help me stay away from evil. Sin is foolish; righteousness is wise. When I live righteously, I am on the path to wisdom, and everyone in my life benefits.
Something New: The contrast between wise and foolishness is ongoing throughout the Bible. Solomon continues to warn us the dangers of living the foolish life, or worldly life (Satin’s ways) over the wise, righteous ways of eternity (God’s ways). Every person either possesses one or the other of these pairs of characteristics. No one gets to be both; a person is either wise or foolish—not partially wise or partially foolish. Proverbs 10:1-32 is therefore like a mirror—what you see is who you are.
Something To Do: Choose to live God’s ways. Listen to the Holy Spirit. Change my heart to have more of Him and less of me. Use everything I have for God’s glory.
lkennedy! Love your Something New…..”Proverbs 10:22 is therefore like a mirror ~what you see is who you are”.
Totally need to write that on a card and post it to my mirror. Thank you!
My takeaways:
10:7 – We have many memories of the godly, but the name of a wicked person rots away. How will I be remembered?
10:11, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 31, 32 – These verses are all about what we say … The words of the godly are: life giving, bring understanding, are like sterling silver, encourage many, gives wise advice, speak helpful words.
What am I saying? What comes out of my mouth? Death or life? Oh Lord, help me in this area. Set a guard over my mouth, Lord. Keep watch over the door of my lips. Help me to be sensible and keep my mouth shut (v 19).
Fear of the Lord – It ALL begins with Him. I
NEW: 10:23-26 switch it around and mention the wicked first … interesting.
I like your comment “How will I be remembered?” Something to think about.
I noticed the switch too!
My takeaways from today’s reading
Something Old
-I noted several references to good judgment in Proverbs 9 & 10:
Use good judgment.
Wisdom lives together with good judgment.
Learn to use good judgment.
Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.
Something New
From Proverbs 8:22 “The LORD formed wisdom from the beginning, before he created anything else.” I never noticed that before as well as the following verses that speak of wisdom being there when our world was created. Very interesting!
Something To Do
“Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut. (Proverbs 10:19)
There are times to speak and times to be quiet. Ask God to help me be sensible and know when enough has been said and it is time to keep my mouth shut.
