Getting Back To Then

I think of the good old days, long since ended, when my nights were filled with joyful songs. I search my soul and ponder the difference now.

  1. Something Old
Psalm 75:6-7, “For no one on earth…..from east or west, or even from the wilderness….can raise another person up. It is God alone who judges; he decides who will rise and who will fall.” It is so easy to forget Who is really in charge. We think we can take control of these things. How much less stressful our lives would be if we were to simply acknowledge, know and rest in the fact that it is God who is sovereign over all.

    Something New
Psalm 78:33, “So he ended their lives in failure and gave them years of terror.” This sounds so harsh. But I often think about how truly unmerciful it would be if there were no consequences, no effects, no constraints upon our actions. How is it loving or kind to allow wrong to prevail and misbehavior and sin to go unpunished? This is often a quandary for me in praying for myself and others. Is it OK to pray for God’s judgement as well as His mercy? I believe it is if we hold the scales in a balanced way. We must not pray only for….. justice for others and mercy for ourselves!

    Something To Do
Psalm 78:39, “For he remembered that they were merely mortal….” Speaking of mercy….……I am so grateful that God remembers I am merely mortal. I want to remember that without using it as an excuse for continuing to sin. (also speaking of balance!)

  2. Today’s lesson was tough. It really rests on our willingness to do the work – our willingness to be humble, to search our souls, to remember that God is sovereign in good times and challenging times, even when challenging times last much longer than we thought we could stand. God, your ways are holy. Please help me remember your awesome power, regardless of my earthly circumstances.

I also loved the message in Psalm 78:2-7. Having just experienced the miraculous birth of my second grandchild, these verses seem especially important. I truly understand the psalmist’s reminder to teach the next generations to know, love, and obey the Lord. I pray that I can do this in a way that is pleasing to God. Amen.

  3. My Takeaways: Always acknowledge God’s sovereignty over my world.

Something Old: Psalm 75:7 “It is God alone who judges, he decides who will rise and who will fall.” Each and everyone of us small and great are accountable to God for our deeds. We have to answer to him. No one will escape judgement.

Something New: Psalm 78- Israel history- it isn’t pretty. History often repeats itself-Asaph did not want the people to become like their ancestors “stubborn, rebellious, and unfaithful, refusing to give their hearts to God. Each generation must set its hope on God, remembering his glorious miracles and obeying his commands.” (V. 7, 8) Bible literacy is more than an accumulation of biblical facts; it is the revelation of God Himself and His agenda to redeem ruined sinners. When the light of Bible literacy grows dim among God’s people, darkness will prevail within the culture. Knowledge always precedes faith; therefore, Bible literacy is crucial to the spiritual vitality of God’s people.

Something To Do: Be a good steward of my heritage. Thank God for all the good things he has done in and for the USA. Learn from past successes and failures from those who have come before me. Share with everyone what God has done. Educating my family with Bible literacy is my responsiblity. Don’t depend on the school, the church, or anyone else to accomplish the responsiblity God has given me.

  4. I love the verse Psalm 77:19 Your Road led through the sea, your pathway through mighty waters- a pathway no one knew was there! We might think we are at a dead end but God is the One who can open up a way for us where there seems no way. My to do is to rely on Him and not try to make my own way in my strength. Trust Him.
