For who is God except the LORD?

For who is God except the Lord? Who but our God is a solid rock?
Psalm 18:31

My Takeaways

Something Old

I wonder if David was tenor, baritone, or bass.

Who is God compared to the other gods in my life? (Psalm 18:31)

Who defends me like God?

Who gives me strength? (Psalm 18:32)

Who keeps me steady? (Psalm 18:33)

Who trains me? (Psalm 18:34)

Who protects and supports me? (Psalm 18:35)

Who subdues my enemies? (Psalm 18:39)

Who keeps me out of the reach of my enemy? (Psalm 18:40,48)

Who gives me victory? (Psalm 18:43,50)

Something New

The LORD had rescued David from all his enemies and Saul.  (2 Samuel 22:1)

David didn’t view Saul as an enemy.

Something To Do

Who is like my God?

  1. For who is God except the Lord? Who but our God is a solid rock? As I listened to Wendy this morning, I was convicted of the fact that I am placing potential new job in the place of God – as if this new job (and the higher pay) will save me, will keep me safe, will be my strength, will make things ok. None of that is true. The Lord is all of these things, my Rock, Fortress, Savior, Protector, Shield, Power that saves, Safety & Refuge! Nothing in this earth can even come close – and yet I keep searching the things of this world for what only He can provide. 🙁

I loved today’s reading – how David recounted God’s goodness and faithfulness in his life – through singing praises to Him! This is our only response. To sing praises TO God and ABOUT God! “For this, O Lord, I will praise you among the nations; I will sing praises to your name” Psalm 18:49 I often find myself just singing made up songs of praise as I go about my business in my home (I live alone, thankfully, so that nobody else needs to hear my tone-deaf voice except the Lord LOL). Lately, I’ve been wondering if that is ok to do – it is the only thing that I did when I was in the the old NAR/WOF church culture that I continue to do on occasion today. But as I navigate this new life walking with the Lord, I wasn’t sure if I should keep doing this. And today’s reading reminded me that YES, I should SING PRAISES TO THE LORD!!!

To Do: Seek first His Kingdom and righteousness.

    1. God inhabits the praises of His people! He is so pleased to hear your praise! I’ve so enjoyed getting to see your journey…thank you for being so transparent…it is inspiring!

    2. Yes! Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness! Those verses in Matthew are some of my favorites and ones I go to whenever I am tempted to fall into worrying.

    3. Mary, I want to share a song with you that the worship and played at church yesterday. I’m going to post it on the current day comments so everyone can see it. Check it out in May 6th’s comments. ????

  2. The theme that stood out to me in David’s song was God’s strength. I circled all the mentions of strength or power. I’ve been on a journey this year with a lot of joint pain that flares up off and on. When it flares up I feel weak and tired. This morning I was reminded of the strength and power that is mine in God. Two verse came to mind…

John 15:5 – “Yes, I AM the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in Me, and I in them will produce much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.”

Phil 4:13 – “For I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength.”

Focus on the power and strength living in me and ask God to give me strength, rely on His strength and remain in Him.

    1. HI! I have RA but have been having another journey with muscular inflammatory pain that we don’t know what it is. Phillipians 4:13 is my life verse! Grateful that medicines are working for now. I pray for people who live in chronic pain. Joel Osteen says to keep saying “God is restoring health unto me!”

    2. This is exactly my focus throughout my health journey. It is all for him and by his strength in me giving me victory.

  3. —So much in today’s reading to use for worship and praise.
—It is good to remember what God had done in my life and what He has brought me through and praise Him for it.
—A number of times in today’s reading, it is noted that God is our rock. An older gentleman in our church choir has a hobby of collecting and polishing rocks. Each Christmas and Easter he brings a small box full of the same kind of rock (but a different rock each time) for the choir members. He does this because of all the times in the Bible that it mentions that God is our rock and wants the rocks he shares to be a reminder of this.
—I have had a number of close girlfriends over the course of my life but it seems God has removed each of them over time for a variety of reasons. As I have prayed about this, I think it was to keep them from becoming gods to me or to keep me from being dependent on them instead of on God. Because of this, I now have a better and healthier perspective on my current friendships.

    1. I tend to turn to human beings before God. I find myself in a season of very few friends right now (really only 1 close friend. Some acquaintances in my new church) and I believe the Lord is training me up in relying solely on Him!!

      1. I’m in the same kind of season with friends. My dependence has to be on the Lord or I’m a mess without him, just like Wendy said.

  4. This lesson hit the “ouch” button! Girlfriends? Oh yes. Amazon? Oh yes. Need to turn only to God.

  5. I love you Lord;
    you are my strength.
    Psalm 18:1

I wrote this down everywhere I can write it. Notecards, journal, front bible cover, bathroom mirror, desk, made an image with it in the Bible app for my phone and to be able to share it.
I want to constantly remember, never forget that God and God alone is my strength.
