Victory In The Wake Of Weariness

He placed army garrisons throughout Edom, and all the Edomites became David’s subjects. In fact, the Lord made David victorious wherever he went.
2 Samuel 8:14

My Takeaways

Something Old

If you are feeling beaten down, take some times to write down and remind yourself of these truths:

  • …the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world (NIV) 1 John 4:4b
  • …everyone born of God overcomes the world. (NIV) 1 John 5:4a
  • We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.  2 Corinthians 4:8-10
  • The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.  (NIV) 1 Corinthians 15:56-57

Do not gloat over me, my enemies! For though I fall, I will rise again. Though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light. Micah 7:8

Something New

  1. “The Lord made David (Mary) victorious wherever (s)he went”…. oh how I needed this lesson today (unknowingly)! And thank you for the verses Wendy-I’m writing then on an index card. I am weary. Weary of waiting for God’s promises to be fulfilled in my life. Weary of trying to figure out what His plan is for my life. Weary of doing things my way and the Lord needing to constantly course correct me. But David gives me hope. Knowing he was not perfect – and knowing that God blessed him anyway! “You know what your servant is really like Sovereign Lord” … gives me hope.

David’s prayer of thanks was so beautiful and real and another great model prayer. Guzik’s commentary was a reminder to me to PRAY instead of think or write – actually PRAY to God – shoot the arrow from the bow as Spurgeon said – I will ALWAYS hit the target!!! Don’t worry about the words I use – just bring my broken & contrite heart to Him

“It also says that David came before God to pray this prayer. Some prayers are not prayed. They are said or read or thought, but not prayed. “Not to say this prayer, but to pray this prayer. There is great force in the expression. Some prayers are never prayed, but are like arrows which are never shot from the bow. Scarcely may I call them prayers, for they are such as to form, and matter, and verbiage, but they are said, not prayed. The praying of prayer is the main matter.” (Spurgeon)”

New: The Lord corrected Nathan, who seemed to answer David kind of flippantly “Sure, David, that’s a great idea go ahead and do it”. I need to pray before I respond in many instances – rather than say “Sure, that’s a great idea”

    To Do: PRAY MORE!!!

  2. —Today’s passage notes several times that the LORD made David victorious. If I want to be victorious, I need to seek the Lord and follow His leading, trusting Him for the results.
—Follow David’s example and be bold in prayer. Because of my faith in Jesus and what He did for me on the cross, I can come boldly before the throne of grace in His name.

    1. I love this. Yes – we can come boldly before the throne of grace because of Jesus! I want to pray bolder prayers.

  3. Psalm 60:11-12 points out that human help is often useless against my enemies but with God’s help I can do mighty things. I can find myself trusting in human help and not trusting in God’s help. God can use humans to help but it’s important that I’m going to Him first and putting my trust in Him alone. Then trusting in Him to use whatever resources he chooses to help me gain victory over my enemies and sin strongholds.

    1. I too tend to look for human help (my own or someone else’s) before the Lord. Help me with this Lord. Thank you for reminding me to trust in Him!

  4. I love when David states the truth about God when he says”There is no one like you.” When I try to compare God to what I know based on people it doesn’t work. He is so much greater! If someone I know is kind or loving or forgiving that is nothing compared to how much kinder or more forgiving or loving He is. He is soo much more than this limited mind can imagine. Therein lies my encouragement. He alone is amazing beyond measure.
