RTW April 20

Father, May I?

After this, David asked the LORD, “Should I move back to one of the towns of Judah?”… “Which one town should I go to?”…
2 Samuel 2:1

My Takeaways

Something Old

The Lord is still good, even if we have to wait a little longer.

In reference to worry or concern of our future and the things of our future, Jesus says to

  • But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (ESV)  Matthew 6:33

David had certainly spent time seeking other things and other places, and had learned his lesson.

  • The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. (ESV) Lamentations 3:25

Something New

David didn’t assume the throne was his just because Saul died. He sought the LORD.

Something To Do

Don’t rush the wait.

  1. Wendy’s verses were the same that stood out to me. I love how David continues to seek the Lord and wait on His answer. He hasn’t always been on the right path but his heart is continually drawn back to God. This is my story also. I can ebb and flow in my closeness with God but He always draws me back. I want to be continually seeking Him and His kingdom and letting Him direct my paths. Abide in Him!

    1. Your comment makes me think of the words from a hymn: Prone to wander, Lord I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love. Take my heart O Lord and seal it. Seal it for Thy courts above.

  2. Red Letters
    by David Crowder Band

There I was on death row
    Guilty in the first degree
Son of God hanging on a hill
    Hell was my destiny

    The crowd was shouting crucify
Could’ve come from these lips of mine
The dirty shame was killing me
It would take a miracle to wash me clean

Then I read the red letters
And the ground began to shake
    The prison walls started falling
And I became a free man that day

Felt like lightning hit my veins
My dead heart began to beat
Breath of God filled my lungs
And the Holy Ghost awakened me
Yeah, the Holy Ghost awakened me

When I read the red letters
And the ground began to shake
    The prison walls started falling
And I became a free man that day

For God so loved the whole wide world
Sent His only Son to die for me
Arms spread wide for the whole wide world
His arms spread wide where mine should be
    Jesus changed my destiny

Thank You, God, for red letters
When the ground began to shake
The grace of God started falling
And I became a free man that day

    The prison walls started falling
And I am a free man today

  3. ~I, too, noted that David continues to seek guidance from the Lord. Follow his example! Don’t go out in my own strength and wisdom.

~Uriah the Hittite is noted in the list of the members of David’s Thirty. We will be reading more about him. I had never noted that his name was mentioned here in the list of David’s warriors.

~Three times in today’s reading it is noted that the LORD gave great victory. I need to be faithful to do what God shows me to do as I seek Him and leave the results in His hands. He will give the victory if that is His will in any given situation.

~I was thinking today about the lists of the names of David’s warriors. These men were important as part of David’s army, even those who weren’t called out for anything special. David would not have had much of an army without them. It made me think of a modern example similar to this—the list of the names of the choir members in the program for our Easter concert at church. Some were listed as soloists or part of a trio or ensemble. But the rest were not called out for anything special. There wouldn’t have been much a choir without them.

  4. Jennifer Seeks the Lord

Jennifer has been restored back. She is feeling cautiously spiritually confident. Still having to wait. She is honest and humble in her conversations with God. She doesn’t want to move one step outside of God’s plan for her. She doesn’t want to mess up again. She has a restored soul back to God. She is back on track. Her past mistakes have taught her something. She has certainly spent a lot of time seeking other things in her life, and other places and she has learned her lesson. She has decided to be about only her Father’s business. She seeks his kingdom first everyday. She inquires of Him, asks questions of him and doesn’t want to move until she gets a direct response. She knows that the Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. She knows that her Heavenly Father already knows all her needs. She is learning to be patient and to not rush the wait.

Thank you Father for restoring me to this place through your word and through your presence. I love you.
With God ALL things are possible!

Thank you Wendy for your lesson today, it spoke directly to my heart.

  5. Something Old
II Samuel 3:1, “That was the beginning of a long war.” What stood out to me in today’s reading was the often unpopular truth that we are many times called to “war” in our spiritual walk. It is easy to prefer peace….and we are also admonished to seek such. But we need the wisdom to know which to choose and when and why. Spiritual wars are fought for the truth of God; for His glory; for those things which are worth standing and dying for. Even ordinary, everyday believers are drafted for times such as these in their daily living.

    Something New
II Samuel 23:20b, “Benaiah….chased a lion down into a pit, despite the snow and slippery ground, he caught the lion and killed him.” I can only assume that the reason for the proactive pursuit and killing was due to the potential threat the lion would pose if allowed to live. Things that present a danger to our walk with the Lord and our spiritual well-being need to be removed. We need to take seriously those habits and tendencies and sins that lure us away from our God.

    Something To Do
II Samuel 23: 9, “….once Eleazar and David stood together against the Philistines when the entire Israelite army had fled. He killed Philistines until his hand was too tired to lift his sword….”

Spurgeon saw that Eleazar, in his solitary stand until victory, was a tremendous example for believers today. “Solitary prowess is expected of believers. I hope we may breed in this place a race of men and women who know the truth, and know also what the Lord claims at their hands, and are resolved, by the help of the Holy Spirit, to war a good warfare for their Lord whether others will stand at their side or no.”

II Samuel 23:12, “……but Shammah held his ground.” I want to HOLD my ground, in His strength.
