God Is God

Then he and Aaron summoned the people to come and gather at the rock. “Listen, you rebels!” he shouted. “Must we bring you water from this rock?”
Numbers 20:10

My Takeaways

Something Old

  • I am not in partnership with God. WOW. A-ha moment for me.
  • It’s dangerous to think “we” (God and I) accomplish anything.
  • I must never take credit for what God accomplishes through me.
  • If I don’t stay humble, I will be humbled.

Something New

God didn’t punish the multitude for the sin of one. But God sent His one and only Son to pay the penalty of sin for the multitude. Drop the mic moment.

Something to Do

Praise God for my a-ha moments.

  1. Here is some insight from http://www.gotquestions.org regarding the rock. Make sure to check out the reference to 1 Cor. 10:4.

The water-giving rock is used as a symbol of Christ in 1 Corinthians 10:4. The rock was struck in Exodus 17:6, just like Christ was crucified once (Hebrews 7:27). Moses’ speaking to the rock in Numbers 20 could have been meant as a picture of prayer. Jesus was “struck” once, and He continues to provide living water to those who pray in faith to Him. When Moses angrily struck the rock, he destroyed the biblical typology and, in effect, crucified Christ again.

    1. I had read something very similar to this in my study bible. Thanks for sharing the link!!

  2. Something Old:
    – The people rebelled against Aaron and Moses. They didn’t seem to recognize that it was God who was leading Aaron and Moses and that their trials were a result of their own sin. Later in the account of the bronze snake they finally acknowledge that they were sinning against God.
    – Moses’ sin was that he didn’t trust God enough to demonstrate His holiness. He took credit for making the water come from the rock and did it with force not spoken word like God had said to do.

    Something New:
    – I loved how tender God was in Aaron’s death. He gave Moses and Eleazar warning that it was time and gave them a special moment together to changed the priestly role.

    Something To Do:
    – Obey God’s direction exactly and don’t let my emotions get in the way and take over. Give God the glory.
    – Don’t grow impatient in my journey with the Lord. Don’t complain. Remember my complaints are really against God and are sin.

  3. ~Something Old:
    More grumbling and complaining!
Foreshadowing of Jesus with the bronze snake.

    ~Something New:
I wonder how Moses felt after Aaron’s death, to be leading the people without his brother and his spokesman.

    ~Something To Do:
Thank God for sending Jesus. Because He was lifted up on the cross, all who “look” to Him will be saved.
    Guard against grumbling and complaining.
    Obey-my heart attitude is important.

  4. That was a beautiful lesson today Wendy. Very heartfelt and touching.

I have to remember when I complain, it’s against the Lord and that is sin. I need to stop complaining. Period. End of story.

    Stay humble, humble, humble.
