Watch Out For Korahs, and Certainly Don’t Be One

One day Korah son of Izhar, a descendant of Kohath son of Levi, conspired with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, from the tribe of Reuben.
Numbers 16:1

My Takeaways

Something Old

What if my acts of rebellion were recorded in a book for all the world to see?

You can easily recognize the Korahs of the world:

  • aren’t content.
  • rise against authority.
  • incite others against authority.
  • act as if they are representing the group, when they really want power.

You can easily recognize godly leaders of the world:

  • find contentment in obeying God.
  • treat the enemy with respect.
  • humble themselves in front of their enemy.
  • pray for their enemy.

Something New

Korah was of the same tribe as Moses.

Something to Do

Keep a watchful eye for the Korahs. Pray for those in authority over me.

  1. The scripture that comes to the forefront in relation to rebellion is 1 Samuel 15:23. For rebellion, disobedience to God’s command; is as the sin of witchcraft.
In reality “idol worship”, divinations, consulting familiar spirits, stubborness, and these are condemned by God!

Korah was usurping the authority of God, thought he could do a better job and lead a revolt against God’s divinely appointed leaders. There is a stiff warning here, God divinely appoints leaders whether in the church or governing authorities over us and doesn’t need our approval, He is God!

Romans 13:2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

Dislike those God has divinely appointed in the church, thinking we could do a better job, pray for them as the Lord commanded in 1 Timothy 2:2.

Dislike our President; God did divinely appoint him for such a time as this, we are commanded to pray for him in 1 Timothy 2:2. Reread Romans 13:2 above.

Praying for them, means, we constantly ask that the Lord will open their hearts to the truth, capture their hearts to focus on wisdom from the Holy Spirit and His guidance.

    1. It was interesting to read through this section on Korah. I’ve read it before and knew the basics of the story but reading it again today in context of the last few days readings brought a freshness to it and more understanding. Korah’s rebellion was rooted in jealousy and discontent that Moses and Aaron we leading. Num 12:3 clearly stated that Moses was very humble. Moses himself says in vs 28 that God had sent him and he didn’t do anything on his own. So their jealousy was unfounded. Korah stirred up a rebellion of the whole community and God took drastic measures and destroyed him and his family. The very next morning the people we muttering again. God sent a plague and it was Aaron who stood between God and the people to purify them and stop the plague. This is so clearly what Jesus has done for us! He stood between God and us and purified us to end the plague of sin and death! Thank you Jesus!!

  2. ~”The LORD is the one you and your followers are really revolting against.” (Num 16:11a)
~So, when I am tempted to complain about circumstances in my life, remember that it is ultimately God I am complaining about and what He has allowed in my life. Rather than complaining to others and stirring them up, take it to God, in a respectful manner and work through it with Him.

  3. Numbers 16:13–Isn’t it enough that you brought us out of Egypt, a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us here in this wilderness, and that you now treat us like your subjects?
Oh, how Satan can deceive and twist the truth. He has the rebels claiming that the land they came from is better than the land God is bringing them to. Once again when things are unknown, the comfort of familiarity raises it’s head and brings doubt with it. I must remember that God’s promises are true–He will do what He has said he would do. Don’t let Satan twist things around!!

  4. Love your insights ladies! Discontentment jumped right out me in I6:9.
And how thankful I am for Jesus for saving me from the righteous and holy wrath of All Mighty God!!
And finally “Be sure to give the best portions of the gifts you have been given to you.” Number 18:29

    1. That is what I wrote down too “Be sure to give the best portions of the gifts you have been given to you.” Need to work on that.

  5. Don’t devalue what God has given you. When we compare our gifts we others, we question God’s blessings. In Num 16:9, Moses reminded Korah of God’s favor- “Does it seem insignificant to you that the God of Israel has chosen you from among all the community of Israel to be near Him, so you can serve in the Lord’s Tabernacle and stand before the people to minister to them?
