My Takeaways

Something Old

God has a plan and place for us, better than land.

We are a royal priesthood.

  • But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (ESV) 1 Peter 2:9

We receive Jesus and the Holy Spirit as our portion.

  • For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (ESV) John 3:16
  • Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. (ESV) John 16:7

We have an inheritance.

  • Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints. (ESV) Ephesians 1:18
  • Giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. Colossians 1:12
  • In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. (ESV) Ephesians 1:13-14

He is our portion.

  • My flesh and my heart may fail,but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. (ESV) Psalm 73:26
  • Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore, I will wait for him.” (NIV) Lamentations  3:22-24

Something New

All this is mine because I believe. No warring is necessary to conquer it. It never runs out, and it is available to everyone who believes.

Something to Do

Live like I am royal in the place He has for me. Live a life worthy of my inheritance.

  1. As I read about The division of land I think of Psalm 16:6. “The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.”

    I wonder how much whining and complaining was done as the land was divided? Isn’t this what I do when I see others getting certain things or more than I have?

    Caleb was not afraid to ask for what was promised to him by God. I’m still afraid to ask!

    Caleb “wholeheartedly follow the Lord“-he said this twice! Can I even say it once?

    These hard questions that I’m asking myself through today’s reading remind me that I indeed have been given a more wonderful inheritance in the Holy Spirit, without Whom I wouldn’t be able to look deeper.

    I have one question and not sure if anyone can answer it- how did God get the rest of the kingdom of sihon if Reuben already received the entire kingdom? Joshua 13:21, 27?

  2. Joshua 14:
    Vs. 7 “I was 40 years old when……
    God sent me on this journey to whole health (starting with Whole 30).
    Vs. 8 “For my part, I wholeheartedly followed the Lord.”
    Vs. 10 “Now, as you can see, the Lord has kept me alive and well as He promised for all these 45 years since. Today I am 85 years old.”
    Vs. 11 “I am as strong now as when God sent me on that journey, and I can still travel and fight as well as I could then.”

    This read to me like a prophecy for my life. I am actually 40 years old right now and I pray to follow God wholeheartedly throughout this journey I am on with him to whole health. My hope is a long life on earth, strong and healthy in every way. One of the benefits to this journey to whole health is to be 85+ and strong as I was at 40, still able to travel and fight life’s battles with God’s strength. Yesterday, I was concerned that I was eating too big of portion sizes even of the healthy foods I’ve been eating. Today, God reminded me that those thoughts and worries were in vain. He said HE is my portion forever.
    “My health my fail and my spirit may grow weak; but God remains the strength of my heart; He is mine forever. Psalm 73:26

    That is the true promise, the thing I can truly rely on, count on, hope in, trust in, be secure in…is in God and God only. I cannot put my faith in my health, not in food, not in working out, not in my own strength…but God – He Himself (Joshua 13:33)
    “For the Lord, the God of Israel, had promised that (he himself) would be their allotment.
    In Christ alone, my hope is found.

  3. My takeaway today was to follow God wholeheartedly and trust him to be faithful to his promises to me. It may take 45 yrs but God never goes back on His promises and He will go with me to conquer the victory that is mine in Him.

    ~Am I following the Lord WHOLEheartedly? If not, what needs to change.

  5. The verse that stood out to me was Joshua 13:1. When Joshua was an old man, the LORD said to him, “You are growing old, and much land remains to be conquered.” It reminded me that no matter my age there are still things I can do for God’s kingdom . As long as He gives me breath there are “ lands to be conquered” with His guidance and Presence.
