That God Would Save Someone Like Her
So the two mean set out and came to the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there that night.
Joshua 2:1c
My Takeaways
Something Old
Rahab: saved by faith not by works
- She was a prostitute. (Joshua 2:1)
- She was liar. (Joshua 2:4)
- She declared her faith God. (Joshua 2:11)
- She got saved. promise of the red rope. (Joshua 2:18)
- She put action to her faith. (Joshua 2:21)
Jericho and everything in it must be completely destroyed as an offering to the LORD. Only Rahab the prostitute and the others in her house will be spared, for she protected our spies. Joshua 6:17
Something New
Sometimes the fulfillment of our promise will be realized by another generation. Deuteronomy 34:4
Moses was obedient for someone else’s promise. He was never promised to be a great nation, or for his name to be made great.
Something to Do
Obey, the blessings of another generation depend on it.
What I found interesting, Salmon was the father of Boaz and Rahab was Boaz’s mother. Rahab is part of the genealogy/ancestor of Jesus found in Matthew 1.
She married Salmon of the tribe of Judah.
She is almost always mentioned in the Bible as “Rahab the harlot.” But that’s not all. Rahab was also a Canaanite, who were the hated enemies of Israel. A Harlot, a Canaanite and a liar but a wealthy one. Some translations; Rahab was an innkeeper, a business in cloth, and was well informed on the travels of those who stayed there. Rahab’s name means pride and the result; her upbringing and worldliness.
In my opinion, the men hid there because people would be accustomed to seeing strangers come and go at all hours of the night. Again, my speculation, what are the odds, Salmon was one of the spies?
In my opinion, the reason God chose Salmon to marry Rahab, Salmon is of the princely line in Judah, the royal tribe of Israel, ushering in the Royal linage of the Messiah.
God made a way through the thin red line beginning in Geneses to Jesus Christ, bringing together Jew and Gentile as one people deeply grateful for their redemption.
Wow! This is amazing information. Thank you for sharing it.
I’ve heard and read the story of Rahab since I was a child but today it was fresh. She was a prostitute and a liar but God still used her and saved her not because of what she did but because of her faith – Heb 11:31. It was neat to see fresh things in a familiar story.
I was struck again with how important and vital God’s Word is to our life and success. His word is the pathway to success…not ease but success. The more I read, study, meditate and obey the more success in the lord I will have.
~Praise God! There is no one like Him! (Deut 33:26)
~ I always wonder, when I read about Moses’ death, how he died. It seems he was still in good health as it says his eyesight was clear and he was as strong as ever. Did he just go to sleep?
~Because no one knew the exact place where Moses was buried, they could not set up a shrine and idolize him. I need to guard against idolizing any of my spiritual leaders.
~Joshua 1:8 “Study the Book of Instruction continually. . .Meditate on it day and night.” I want to continue to read, study, and meditate on on God’s Word day and night. This made me think of what Lynn Cowell said on FBC Live last night about how she bookmarks her day with the Word in the morning and before bed.
I wondered why Joshua sent 2 spies given the history of Moses sending 12 spies, only for them to return with a negative report.
