Faith Fat
“But Israel soon became fat and unruly; the people grew heavy, plump, and stuffed! Then they abandoned the God who had made them; they made light of the Rock of their salvation.”
Deuteronomy 32:15
My Takeaways
Something Old
We become fat in our faith when
- Our quiet time is no longer a priority
- Decisions are made without prayer.
- Life moves from God-centered to autopilot.
- Others become unimportant, and I take precedence.
Something New
Yeshurun (yesh-oo-roon’)
Definition: “upright one”, poetic name for Israel
Something to Do
Don’t become faith fat.
I too prefer a physical bible and I have A LOT of them in different translations!
There was so much in today’s reading for me – but the big one for me was psalm 90:2&12. The ONLY eternal being is GOD! He is without end! Everlasting to everlasting! This struck me in a deep way this morning (just when I was whining to Him that I don’t connect with Him in His Word like others do – isn’t He wonderful like that?).
But OUR days are numbered – easily swept away. And during them we will suffer pain, sadness, hardship. And yes joy and good things as well hopefully. And we will experience physical death. What have I done with the time I have been given?
To do: stop wasting time focusing on me me me me me! Get out there and share the Gospel.
Deut 32:2 “Let my teaching fall on you like rain; let my speech settle like dew.”
I loved the picture of this verse. My soul can feel dry sometimes and my heart can get hard. God’s Word is like a refreshing rain that soaks into my soul and softens it like dew.
Deut 32:47 “these instructions are not empty words — they are your life!” God’s Word is my life! Read it and live it! It is the pathway to life abundant!
I really like how Moses said in his song that God was their home. They had wandered 40 years yet they had God as their home. When I think of home it is the place where I am comfortable and loved and accepted as me. God truly is my home. He is the One who loves me, accepts me and makes me comfortable being me ( even when I am having to learn things that don’t always feel comfortable.)
~Make the statements about our God from Deut 31 a prayer of praise today. “How glorious is our God! He is the Rock; his deeds are perfect. Everything He does is just and fair. He is a faithful God who does no wrong; how just and upright he is!”
~Deut 31 also speaks of God being a jealous God. He does not want us to forget and or worship anyone or anything else. Ask God to search my heart show me anyone or anything I have put in His place this week. Request Tim Keller’s Book, Counterfeit God’s from the library.
~Ask to continue to teach me that life on earth is brief and to give me wisdom to live it well for His glory. (Ps 90:12)
~Remember that is is God who makes my efforts successful. (Ps 90:17)
~Reading Psalm 90 in context here at the end of Moses’ life gives its words additional impact.
