Identify Them

… do not listen to them.
Deuteronomy 13:3a

My Takeaways

Something Old

Romans 16:17-20

I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.  For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive. For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil.  The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

How can I spot them?

  • Cause divisions among God’s people
  • Create obstacles contrary to the doctrine
  • Communicate with smooth and flattering talk

1 Timothy 6:20-21

2 Peter 2:1

Matthew 7:15

2 Timothy 4:3

Matthew 24:24

1 John 4:1

Something New

God created a system where people wouldn’t be chronically poor. Deuteronomy 15:1

Something to Do

Don’t let “them” get a foothold in my heart.

  1. I’m RUNNING! Wow-this reading and lesson could not be more spot on for me. I have awakened to the fact that I have been in a church that is so far out there – seeking signs wonders and miracles as their god vs Jesus. But since beginning RTW this year my mind was slowly opening and I began to question the teachings of the leaders. And last Sunday as the pastor preached that God did not cause the flood (oh man his opinion on this was crazy) I turn to God’s Word and saw TRUTH! And not just with respect To that particular false teaching, but my eyes were suddenly opened to everything I had been taught the past three years. And I ran! I sought counsel from others outside the church who had left and they are helping me find a Bible teaching church.

The devil certainly does masquerade as an angel of light – and I have been led down the wrong road because I was not rooted in the Word. The God who is merciful and wonderful and loving has shown me that His Word is my compass. It is my barometer. It is LIFE!

Thank you Wendy for this timely lesson-it also has been an answer to my prayer as to what to do about all the friends That I made here. I moved to this area for this church! But I’ve also felt that I do not want To be anywhere around this culture. So I may be “alone” for a while as I seek new friendships in a God-fearing, Bible-believing church.

Thankful for all of you here.

    1. Wow! Praising the lord for opening your eyes and giving you courage to run! Praying for you as you transition to a new church home. God will surely bless your obedience!

    2. Praising God with you for this revelation! God loves you too much to leave you in this place of false teachings Mary. God will provide the church and the friends you desire and he will place you exactly where he wants you as you seek and follow him. So happy for you and thankful for your obedience to RUN! God is so good!

    3. Thanking God with you for how He is working in your life and the truth you are finding in His Word. God’s Word is the only place to find truth. We should test everything we hear or read to see how it lines up with God’s Word. May God bless you for your obedience in this!

  2. I was challenged today to evaluate my giving. What areas am i doing well and what areas could I be more generous? It all has been given to me by God so I don’t want to hold back or give grudgingly.

I was challenged also to cling only to God and not be enticed to follow other gods. Test everything against The God I know and His Word.

    1. I also saw so many recurring themes of giving in the passage. Many times, we think giving has to be monetary but it can also be of our time and talent. Are we willing to sacrifice one weekend a month to do outreach with our church or volunteer at a soup kitchen? Are we willing to wake up early one morning and intercede for our nation? These are all forms of giving.

  3. This is one of the main reasons I stay in God’s word. So I will know His truth and be able to more easily recognize the lies.

  4. ~In today’s reading, I noted that it said that the tithe will teach you to always fear the Lord. I have found in my own life, that my financial giving to the church and other ministries has increased my trust in God to provide for my needs. It has also helped me to think more about how all my money is spent and if I am honoring God with my spending.
