A Holy People

You must be my holy people. Therefore, do not eat any animal that has been torn up and killed by wild animals. Throw it to the dogs.
Exodus 22:31

My Takeaways

Something Old

The purpose of the law can be summed up in the first seven words of our key verse: You are to be my holy people. Every law and restriction was designed to bring about a life of holiness.

Holiness is more about the devotion of my life than perfection in my life.

  • Jesus directs to us holiness— Seek Me first
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (NIV) Matthew 6:33
  • Paul directs us to holiness— Don’t act like the world.
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2

Something New

Moses was modeling leadership and obedience all along. (Exodus 24)

What am I modeling to those who are around me?

Something to Do

Make sure the devotion of my life is Jesus… no compromises, exceptions, or substitutions.

  1. Good morning everyone! Something new for me-24:11 – They ate a covenant meal with the Lord! Wow! God’s desire is always fellowship and relationship. And he keeps chasing after the Israelites (and me) even when they stray. Wendy thank you for reminding me that holiness is not about perfection but about devotion. I cannot keep the laws as outlined here. BUT JESUS! God doesn’t command us to be holy without giving us the ability to actually be holy! In 23:29-30 The Lord says He will not drive out the Hivited, etc all at once but a little at a time-yes could he have wiped them out at one time? can he “zap“ me and make me holy all at once? Of course – but the process Is so much more rewarding for both myself and the Lord! In the process I learn to trust him. In the process I learned to trust myself. And in the process I learned patience and grace. In the process I made holy and go from glory to glory!!!.

  2. Exodus 23:29-30 were my key verses for today. God tells them that he won’t drive out all the enemies in one year. Why? Because this wouldn’t be best for them. He is always concerned with my best not what is easiest. He knew they’d be over run and overwhelmed if things happened too quickly. So year by year He would drive out the enemies and allow them to take the land. This encouraged me in my walk with God and desire to conquer areas of sin in my life. Some by be conquered more quickly and others may take years…the key to victory is staying in step with God, walking in obedience no matter how long the journey. Blessing will come as I patiently seek obedience.

  3. ~I was tracking with Wendy in noting Ex22:31 “You must be my holy people.” I note in my Bible whenever I find the word “holy”.
~My Something New: Ex 22:7c “For I am merciful.” There are many provisions in today’s reading about being merciful to people.

  4. I love this! ” Holiness is more about devotion of my life than perfection in my life”

  5. Reading through the lesson, what caught my attention, was the 6 “Plans”, God from the beginning of time had a Plan! I come to the Ephod, “the scarlet thread”, the scarlet thread runs throughout scripture, symbolizing the blood of Christ. It was first seen in the garden of Eden when God sacrificed an animal to provide garments for Adam and Eve.
The scarlet thread during the birth of Judah and Tamar’s twins, God selecting Perez as the first born.
The threads of gold, blue, purple and scarlet in the ephod. Gold is Gods glory, blue is Jesus heavenly beginning, purple is Jesus as King and scarlet the blood of Christ!
The scarlet rope tied in the window by Rahab to keep her and her family safe from invasion.
We have the Passover, the sacrifice of an animal, sprinkling the blood over the doorposts and Moriah, the animal sacrifice that took Isaac’s place. The theme is throughout the bible of Jesus and His sacrifice redeeming mankind.
This scarlet thread traveled all the way up to John the Baptist who would usher in Jesus the Christ.
