A Little Talk About Sin
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. This is how you are to deal with those who sin unintentionally by doing anything that violates one of the LORD’s commands.”
Leviticus 4:1-2
My Takeaways
Something Old
For unintentional sin, ignorance error. When the person realized the sin, confession is expected, and atonement is required.
- Sin is serious. (An offense against God.)
- Sin is costly. (The blood of an innocent animal.)
- Sin separates. (Without a blood sacrifice, there was no forgiveness.)
Sin has to be dealt with.
Something New
The person didn’t drop the sacrifice off at the Tabernacle door with a quick apology. He was responsible for taking the life of the animal, metaphorically passing on his sins to the animals.
Something to Do
Don’t forget the one and only atonement of Jesus for my sin.
“Remember, the fire must be kept burning on the altar at all times. It must never go out.” Commentaries state that the fire was never to go out because the fire was started by God. Jesus started an “eternal flame” on the day of Pentecost, 10 days after He ascended to heaven,
in those tongues of flame, when the Holy Spirit came and filled the disciples. That same flame continues to burn in the life of every Christian today.Through the Holy Spirit my own spirit has connection with God. Through the Holy Spirit I find out what God’s will for my lives is, and through the Holy Spirit I see how to accomplish that will. This eternal flame of the Holy Spirit is available through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Here’s an image of the burnt offering altar from the time of Leviticus.
I was struck by how God knew the people, and me, would sin unintentionally and He made a way to deal with that. It challenged me to ask the Holy spirit to reveal any ways that I am sinning unintentionally or have sinned and am unaware of it. Then I must be faithful to confess and make right whatever he might reveal…with God and with any person involved. To ignore His revelation will be to quench the spirit in my life.
In Lev 6:27 it says that the priests were made holy when they ate the sacrificial meat. Made me think of how we are made holy by Jesus who is our sacrifice.
Psalm 51:16-17, “You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.”
Along with so many other voices who have spoken of their gratitude….I too am grateful that I do not have to sacrifice an animal and spill the blood and do the work of slaughtering and preparing with all of its detail. Christ has done it all for me. It is now about my (broken) spirit and my (contrite) heart and my obedience.
Leviticus 5:4, “Or if they make a rash vow of any kind, whether its purpose is for good or bad…..”
When we are in desperate places it is so easy to make passionate promises. I need to learn to ask God what He desires of me in each instance. Micah tells us what He requires: “To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” That’s a great starting point!
I’ve been meaning to share this while in Exodus. Exodus 33:21 The LORD continued, “There is a place near Me where you are to stand upon a rock, 22 and when My glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft of the rock and cover you with My hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take My hand away, and you will see My back; but My face must not be seen.”…
A few years back, I was in a very hard place in my life, I prayed this scripture, I wanted to see God’s glory and for Him to pass by me.
I was invited to breakfast with many in attendance but there was unfriendly fire, I felt so out of place, I felt worthless and questioned “why” I even agreed to come. Breakfast was served, I noticed an elderly couple sitting in the back corner of the restaurant, nothing spurred me about them. They finished breakfast, singled me our, came right up to me; the group was so busy conversing they didn’t notice their conversation with me.
Remember, I prayed to see God’s glory? They intensely looked me in the eyes and said “your face is shinning, your face is glowing”! With that, they walked away, was that a visitation of intertaining Angel’s unaware?
I didn’t see God’s glory, but “His” glory was resting (glowing) on me in a mighty way. He knew of the hurt and ache in my heart and wanted to encourage me. In an environment of unfriendly fire, God wanted to let me know He answered my prayer but not in a manner I expected.
That is so beautiful, thank you for sharing.
Unintentional sin is still sin but it’s not realized. When we become aware or realize our sin we must admit our guilt (confess), and repent. The Holy Spirit will make us aware of our sin.
Thank you Jesus for making me right with God, that I am once and for all forgiven.
Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. Hebrews 9:22
Throughout the reading today, I kept thinking about what a massacre the Tabernacle must have looked like at all times with the animals being slaughtered and blood everywhere. All those innocent animals that had to die. I might be a wimp, but I can barely even stand to hold a small packaged chicken to clean it let alone kill an animal the way it was required back then. I’m SO grateful for Jesus and the sacrifice he made for me. This song was playing over and over in my mind as I read today.

I think it’s important to point out that although Jesus’s grace is inexhaustible and forgiveness is always there, there comes a point where God will turn a Believer who is in constant, habitual sin over to that sin to reap the full consequences of it. The church, in fact, is explicitly instructed to treat a Believer who is in this state, habitually sinning and refusing correction, as an unbeliever and give them over to Satan. It’s a good reminder to be in constant fellowship with Godcand in tune with the Holy Spirit.
Thank you for your comment. This is a truth that many often prefer to turn away from and not consider, let alone discuss, but it is God’s truth. We need to always know our God as both merciful and just.
