The New Year’s Day Post
OK girls… here it is, the obligatory New Year’s Day post.
You might have read one.
You might have even written one.
I’m not sure exactly what we are supposed to say on these New Year Day’s posts. Do we share our resolutions, goals and promises for the coming year, so others will know how we plan to change? Do we confess our poor attempts at last year’s self promises, so others will know we fell short?
I’ve never been one to make resolutions; I fall short after about 30 days. Long term goals don’t work for me either; I have a short-term brain. I forget what I resoluted ( I know that isn’t a real word. That’s the fun thing about writing, you get to make words up. Sorry to upset all the teachers so early in the morning.) and overlook what goals I set, and when I finally do remember, I feel like a failure. So, I keep one thing in front of me every day… God’s Word.
God’s Word leads me where I should go, teaches me what I should know, and shapes me into the person I’m supposed to be. These are things I can’t accomplish alone, but are things I want and need in my life because I love Jesus and long for the favor of God on my life. When this is our pursuit, any resolutions, goals and self promises we make pale in comparison to what the God of immeasurably more has in store.
Some people have one word, I have one verse. I call it a spotlight verse, a verse from God’s Word that I feel directed by the Spirit to keep in front of me all year. Just like a spotlight brightens the darkened path where we walk, the Word of God illumines our direction so we go where God wants us to go, accomplish what God wants us to accomplish, and become who God wants us to become. (Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and light unto my path. Ps. 119:105)
My spotlight verse for 2019 is a hard one. Honestly, I’m afraid to pray it, because of its content… I see some hard times ahead. God in His sovereignty is preparing my heart for something ahead that will be difficult. I’d much rather pray some life-affirming, blessing-from-the-heavenlies verse but God says this is my verse…
But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too. Mark 11:25
Yeah, I know.
But God can and will do good stuff with hard verses.
So, we’ve come to the end of my obligatory New Year’s Day post. What would you post for today? A goal? A resolution? A promise? I’d love to hear about it.
I too have been thinking about the new year and wanting to get more into the bible. But it seems I can’t seem to carve out some time.
In a daily devotional I get from Our Daily Bread, the verse for today was about God saying NO which I plan to print and post. But yours too hit a spot so maybe I will have two verses this year to ponder!
Wendy, after almost three years of health problems, I am beginning to feel like myself again!!!! During that time, I would begin reading through the Word, but hospital, rehab stays would prevent me from continuing. I began RTW in 2010 and was faithful until March 2016 when I became sick. That is hopefully behind me and I want to be a part of the group. I need a refresher on the procedures. I just turned 89 years! Remember me?
Blessings,
Teeny
Hi Teeny!
I remember you! I’m back for another year of RTW. I started in 2015 and loved reading your posts. I’m glad that you are feeling better. You can use your same login information to take you to the site, and Wendy has a new welcome video with instructions there too.
Hugs,
Lisa
This seems to be the year that everyone wants to know what a person’s word of the year is. So, Dayspring had a short quiz and I decided to see what came up. It’s funny, or maybe not, my word is “Delight”. No more than 3 days before I took that quiz, I realized that I need to take my delight in the Lord. I need to adore Him, to praise Him, to worship Him, to ponder everything I know His hand is in. I love the word “Ponder”, too, but I’m going to go with learning to Delight in My God.
Hi Wendy – Happy New Years. Looking forward to another great year in Gods Word. Thank you for always hosting. I don’t always post – maybe I should more. 🙂
I’m not sure if I have a word or a scripture or a phrase. But the words that have been coming to me as I look ahead at this new year… Focus, Diligence and Determination. I want to get things done this year. I want to accomplish what I start.
Hi Wendy. I have had a word each year for the past several, but I had never heard of a Scripture for the year. I love this! Thank you! My word for this year is surrender, and my Scripture is 1 Thessalonians 5:24, “The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.” As I read this passage, the word “He” jumps out at me. He–the Lord–will accomplish what He calls me to. My part is to surrender to Him, follow Him, and do my part but leave the outcome in His hands. Relinquishing control is so scary for me, but the reality is, I never did have control. I only thought I did. God bless you, Wendy. Happy New Year <3
Hi, Wendy, your verse hit me hard. I was taken to this this morning: 1Corinthians 16:13 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. I felt a bit anxious but I know God knows everything and will carry me through anything that comes my way. He is my armor.
Hi Wendy,
My Word/s for the year would be Aim & Focus. I want to be more intentional with Putting God first in all I say and do.
Hi Wendy! I’m so grateful to be starting a new year with you and the group! I loved your post. This year my one word is Joy and I am going to focus on choosing Joy even when I feel like being grumpy instead. I’ve let too many things steal my joy over the years and I’m so ready to have it back! The Joy of the Lord is my strength! Happy New Year!!
I have started this Bible study several time but have never finished. I’m really praying to stay focused this year and not let everyday life interfere. I know this is God’s will for me. Prayers please.
