Knowing It All

“You people really know everything, don’t you? And when you die, wisdom will die with you!”
Job 12:2

My Takeaways

Something Old

Know-it-all:

A person who acts as though he or she knows everything; who dismisses the opinions, comments, or suggestions of others.

Wisdom:

  • Wisdom is the ability to make correct judgments and decisions. It is an intangible quality gained through our experiences in life.
  • Wisdom is “Who we are” vs. “What we do.” Wisdom governs choice, pursuit of knowledge, communication, and relationships.
  • Intuition. Our personal experience. Wisdom defines and refines our character. “Character is simply who we are and is the persona and identity of everything we do.”

  • Begins with the fear of the Lord.  Fear of the LORD is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.  Proverb 9:10

Something New

It’s interesting that Job prays to God in front of his friends.

Something to Do

Don’t be a Know-It-All.

  1. Today’s lesson was so perfectly timed as usual. 13:5 Is the verse that stood out to me this morning and went perfectly with Wendy’s lesson. “if only you could be silent! That’s the wisest thing you could do”. I am a real “know it all“ and almost every conversation I have. This realization is becoming more and more apparent as I identify with Job’s friends’ behavior. And I feel the Lord challenging me to practice listening more than talking.

Something new : 13:4. Were The friends actual physicians??

Something to do: set a guard over my mouth Lord. Listen. Be silent. Maybe I will actually learn something.

  2. Ditto to what Wendy said!! This is such a joy to be part of this year long journey through HIS WORD!

  3. Job talked about God holding our life and breath in His hands and that God knows the months that we will live and we won’t be given a minute more. God challenged me to savor every moment, not knowing when myself or my family may be out of time. I could live in fear of the not knowing when our last day will be but instead I live trusting God for tomorrow and savoring life today.

  4. Job said that his friends laughed at him because he “calls to God and expects an answer.” They laughed….wonder what would’ve happened had they began to pray for Job.

This made me more aware, too, that I need to be more expectant when I pray.

Wendy, thank you for making this RTW so enjoyable! I love your honesty and transparency with us.

  5. Wendy, I felt like you were personally talking to me. God was saying, Are you listening? I have to same problem of being a know it all and the same gifts. I am trying to learn to go to God and asking Him to give me the words to say and the right time to say them. Psalm 141:3 is a verse I’ve just memorized. “Lord, set up a guard for my mouth, keep watch at the door of my lips.”
The verse that spoke to me today was Job 12:13. But true wisdom and power come from God…
Thank you Wendy, for your teachings.

  6. Did Job never considered that it was Satan, not God, who was messing with him?

I am glad we know that the dead will rise again, and have hope through struggles.

I am usually a night Read Thru the Word person. Today, no school (where I work)with ice storm, so it is nice to participate during the day!

I love how you bring the word to real life Wendy! And I love everyone’s comments and insight.

  7. ~I need to remember that there are times when the wisest thing I can do is be silent. (Job 13:5)
~in both Job 12 & 13, Job acknowledges the providence and sovereignty of God. I would do well to remember this when going through tough times and circumstances that I don’t understand.
