Help Please

So they Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, “We apostles should spend our time teach the word of God, not running a food program.”
Acts 6:2

Something Old

The apostles set a great example for us busy beavers and over achievers, didn’t they?

  • We do not have to do it all.
  • We are not supposed to do it all.
  • We are not capable of doing it all.

It’s OK to ask for help.

  1. We saw Stephens story unfold in today’s reading. He was chosen to help the church with taking care of the people’s needs. Each time he is mentioned is said to be full of the Holy Spirit or of grace and power. He spoke very boldly to the jewish leaders and retold the history of Israel up until Solomon. He called them out on their rebellion. They were filled the rage and covered their ears. They didn’t want to hear what Stephen was saying. They lead Stephen out to be stoned. Stephen spoke similar words as Jesus did. He released his spirit and prayed ” lord don’t charge them with this sin”. He was truly filled with the spirit! We also saw the first mention of Saul at Stephens death.
I was challenged to be bold for Christ and to know the story of the Bible, as it all flows together, so I could share it like Stephen if needed. Be a Stephen and keep my eyes on heaven in persecution, trusting God to give me words and sustain me no matter what I would face.

  2. My Takeaways: A man called Stephen

Something Old: I felt sad for Stephen as I read of his stoning today. He was the first Christian martyr.  But through this sadness I realized what great faith he had in God and all His promises. By dying he had a lasting effect on expanding the church.

Something New: “His accusers took off their coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul.” Acts 8:58 I wonder what this is all about. By laying their coats at Saul’s feet, Saul must of been a very important person. He must of approved of what was taking place. It’s very hard to imagine that this same young man, Saul, would become Paul. An amazing, devoted follower of God, proving that God is in the business of turning the impossible into the possible.

Something To Do: Live my life for the gospel. Realize that persecution is not a sign that I am doing something wrong; rather it is a sign that I am doing something right.

    1. LKennedy, I am quite behind on my reading, but working to catch up. I, too, was puzzled as to why Stephen’s accusers took off their coats and laid them at Saul’s feet. I read several commentaries and learned the following: These would have most likely been cloaks or outer garments. One site said it would be like us removing our sweatshirt and leaving it with someone to watch. But another commentary sounded more likely…it said those who laid down their coats were not the stoners, but the witnesses. Evidently in biblical times the witnesses to an event laid down their cloaks to show they will be honest witnesses to what they just saw. Saul had been persecuting Christians and would have probably been a “ring leader” in wanting this stoning to take place. Therefore the cloaks were laid at his feet. Yet another commentary mentioned that this may have also been a literary device to introduce Saul. Not sure of the actual reason, but I found all of this interesting and thought I’d share it with you.

      1. Thank you so much for your insights. I am so glad you took time to share what you learned. This was all new and helpful information for me. Thank you Darena. Hope all is going well for you.
