D Is For Devoted

All the believers devoted themselves to the apostle’s teaching, fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper) and prayer.
Acts 2:42

My Takeaways

Something Old

Devoted

  • to continue to do something with intense effort, with the possible implication of despite difficulties
  • staying fixed in a direction.

They devoted themselves…

  • Apostle’s teaching (doctrine)
  • Fellowship
  • Sharing meals (Lord’s supper)
  • Prayers

Something New

Jesus is taken away by guards at Gethsemane, and the disciples desert Him.

Jesus is taken away to heaven, and the disciples go everywhere and preach.

Quite a difference in the disciples’ reactions.

Something to Do

Stay devoted to the right direction.

  1. Watch for Jesus’ return…he’ll be coming on the clouds!

I was so proud of Peter! He went from denying jesus and fleeing to understanding the ot scriptures and connecting them to Jesus’ death and resurrection. Many were saved through his preaching. Reminded me that God is a god of second chances. He forgives and redeems and uses us for his great work even after we deny or mess up.

The end of Acts 2 shows the great unity and passions of the early church. They were devoted to the apostles teaching, communion, prayer and fellowship. They sold what they had and shared with any who had need. They met often for communion and meals and shared generously. Does the church today have such unity? I’m afraid we don’t…I’m calling myself out in this. I’m much more likely to keep my stuff, my time, my resources, my home to myself than to give it up for others. God, break my heart and replace it with a heart of generosity and unity with other believers. The world will see such unity and generosity and turn to you.

  2. My Takaways: Releasing the Holy Spirit

Something Old: I am excited to start the book of Acts today. Reading about the establishment of the church and the outpowering of the Holy Spirit really caught my attention today. I was reminded once again of the wonderful gift Jesus left for me here on earth after he ascended to heaven.

Something New: “And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit..” (Acts2:4) This same Holy Spirit is made available to all who believe in Jesus today. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead dwells within me. Now that’s some amazing stuff. The moment I gave my life to Christ the Holy Spirit made His home in me, to empower me to become conformed to the image of Christ. The Spirit’s purpose is to enable me to live the Christian life. He transforms my mind, my heart, my will, and my actions to glorify Christ. He convicts me of my sins. He leads me into all truth and helps me to remember God’s Word. He protects my soul for eternity. It’s the Holy Spirit that empowers me to witness and gives me the desire to tell others about Jesus. Having this knowledge makes me realize that in order for the Spirit to empower me to do God’s work, I must make myself available to Him. I must continue to believe and have faith in what this power can do. When I allow the power of the Spirit to dwell inside of me I can become the 21st century version of Peter and bring new believers into a Christian Life.

Something To Do: Pray that I have received power from the Holy Spirit and that I am a witness for Jesus in to my family, friends and all the people in my hometown.
