Right Anger

Jesus entered the Temple and  began to drive out all the people buying and selling animals for sacrifice.
Matthew 21:12a

My Takeaways

Something Old

How to Not to Respond to Anger

  • Don’t defend or justify anger – People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.  (Proverbs 28:13) (If there is sin that lead to your anger or was a response to your anger, confess.)
  • Learn from our mistakes – Hot-tempered people must pay the penalty. If you rescue them once, you will have to do it again.  Proverbs 19:19
(There is a price to pay when we respond in anger.)
  • Exercise Restraint – Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back. (Proverbs 29:11)
(Be self-controlled under the control of the Spirit.)
  • Learn to overlook/forgive –  Sensible people control their temper; they earn respect by overlooking wrongs.  (Proverbs 19:11)
(Overlooking and forgiving is not a sign of weakness, but of wisdom.)

Something New

Get angry at the right things.

Something to Do

Be sensible, not foolish.

  1. John 12:43 struck me today..”For they loved human praise more than the praise of god.” Is this true of me? Do I hold back from sharing the gospel because of what people my say? I’m more concerned with people’s acceptance and approval than the approval of God. I must confess this and reorient my focus on doing all for the glory and praise of God and not for the praise of man. Verse 50 says that God’s commands lead to eternal life. These are the words I want to be sharing regardless of what others my think of me. I don’t want to regret my words when I meet Jesus face to face and wish I’d shared more boldly of him.

  2. My Takeaways:Anger and Judgement

Something Old: Anger is not always wrong it’s what we do or say in our anger that gets us into trouble.
Jesus took offense at what the men were doing and drove them out of the temple to make a point. Jesus had a zeal for the things of God. Psalms 69:9 says “Passion for your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.” I believe this prophecy was fullfilled at this moment in the temple. I get angry for so many reasons, most of my anger is of little value. I wonder when the last time was that I got angry for righteous reasons, when the things of God were altered or misused? Jesus was angry for the right reasons. I want my anger ways to be God centered and not self centered.

Something New: John 12:47 “I will not judge those who hear me but don’t obey me, for I have come to save the world and not to judge it.” This verse spoke to me today. Jesus came to deliver people from darkness, the Pharisees like to place their judgment on others. It’s the same today. We have the modern Pharisees who search out and judge sinners and the Jesus followers who search for and rescue sinners. Somtimes I fall in the same trap that Jesus spoke about in John 12:43 “For they loved human praise more than the praise of God.” So I came up with a list and asked myself, Do people see me as the person who is “too good” to hang out with the so called “sinners” of this world or do they see me more like the person who goes and searches and rescues the so called “sinners” of this world? I pondered these thoughts today and wondered. Am I avoiding watching TV or withdrawing from some other “convictional” activity because the Lord told me to, or because it is the “Christian cultural” thing to do? How many lost friends do I have that I interact with regularly? When was the last time that I took the time to get to know my lost neighbors? Does my life revolve totally around my church friends? Do I make excuses not to go to certain events because people may drink, smoke, or use inappropriate language? Do “sinners” feel loved or judged by me? It can be difficult to leave the comfortable circle of Christ loving people, but sometimes I need to leave my comfort zone and reach out to the lost in this world and let them know how much I love them.

Something To Do: Stop placing judgement on others. Pray that I can keep my life God centered at all cost.

    1. This is one of my prayers too – to be less judgmental! I’m definitely a work in progress. Since we are all created in God’s likeness, it helps me to remind myself to look past the surface and search for the Holy or the Divine in each person. If I look with positive intent, I often can avoid judging. But it is still an area where I need a lot of practice!

  3. John 12:46 – “I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark.”
    I want to…
    Trust Jesus.
Live in the light of Jesus. Reflect the light of Jesus to all people.

Matthew 18:22 – “You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.” And Mark adds to this “But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.” -Mark 11:25
    I need to…
    Forgive others.
Ask for and receive God’s forgiveness.
    Have faith without doubt.
    Pray, asking God for anything.
