Positioning Ourselves For Blessings
God Blesses …
Matthew 5:3-10
My Takeaways
Something Old
Blessed means to be happy and in the position to receive favor and benefits from God.
Something New
When we have a spirit of poverty, we find the security of God and His instructions.
When we lose something very precious to us, we will find God’s comfort.
When we are humble and gentle, we will find God’s power and authority.
When we hunger for God, He will make all other hungers subside.
When we care for others, God we will care for us.
When we put God’s truth inside our hearts, the world will see God.
When we strive for peace, we will experience the family ties with God.
When we suffer for the cause of God, He will be our defender.
Something to Do
Position myself for blessings.
I love that we are in the beatitudes today. One Of our pastors talked about being blessed by being poor in spirit on Sunday. She said “spiritual poverty is my utter dependence and need for Jesus!” This brings me great happiness, abundant goodness, delight, BLISS (defined as a state of extreme happiness, the ecstatic joy of heaven). My new declaration each morning is “live happy“ – live in a state of humility which is believing that God is who he says he is and what he says is true. What stood out for me today was Matthew 5:19-20-“anyone who obeys God‘s laws and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. But I warn you unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven“ Jesus said he came to fulfill the law. I can know the law and the rules-and keep myself on track but that’s just being a Pharisee Jesus came to fulfill the law. LOVE FULFILLS!! I looked up the definition of fulfill-and it means to carry into effect, bring to a realization, bring to pass, BUT it also means “to make full, to fill up, to cause to abound, to fill to the top so that nothing shall be wanting”. Isn’t this who Jesus is to us or who he should be to us? And what does love look like? Doing good to those who hate me, blessing those who curse me, praying for those who hurt me, forgiveness, giving Luke 6:35b-36: “he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked. You must be compassionate, just as your father is compassionate“ This is how I am supposed to love my life. Lord help me to see people with Your eyes and heart. Show me the gold in each of your children today.
I was convicted by Matt 5:14-16. To be a light, city on a hill. I too often don’t speak out for God or talk of him in everyday conversation. I’m realizing I don’t want to offend people but that I need to be more bold and shine brightly for him.
I was also challenged by Matt 6:1-4 to not praise myself before others when I take steps of obedience. It’s hard to be humble and let those things I do go unseen but I need to remember my reward is in heaven and I want that reward over whatever earthly praise or reward I might get.
Today’s reading was filled with many “gold nuggets!” The Beatitudes, Salt & Light, fulfillment of the law, and loving our enemies, just to name a few.
Today Luke 6:35-36 was placed on my heart, especially “You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.” Loving my enemies, truly showing kindness even to those who “are unthankful and wicked,” is sometimes a challenge. I don’t really have enemies in the true sense of the word. However, In today’s society, there are so many opinions and they are loudly posted on social media. We are awfully divided. Sometimes we are so busy shouting about our side and our cause that we forget to be compassionate to the person on the other side of the issue. We all have different thoughts and perspectives, but God made us all. Kindness and compassion can go a long way toward bringing people together in this world. And like Luke instructs us, “Love your enemies! Do good to them…..and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High” I pray that I can be compassionate just as my Father is compassionate.
My Takeaways: Jesus Takes the Pulpit
My Takeaways: The reading today was tremendous. Jesus was preaching to believers-people like me. As I read today I was reminded that in order to enter God’s Kingdom I must put away my wordly ways and look beyond what the world says is right and focus on what God says is right. Jesus came to fulfill the law, to obey it to the full which he did. I have to set my sights on righteousness out of gratitude and duty to my Savior. I can’t accomplish this all at once but I can strive to mature spiritually each and every day, becoming more and more like Jesus. Knowing that one day, when Christ returns I will be perfect just as Christ is perfect.
Something New: Jesus preaching today was focused on what’s going on inside my heart. What I “think” can often become what I “do”. I can’t allow my mind to go there, because it may later become my actions. I can’t let my mind wander into cloudy territory. I must keep my mind clean and focused on Jesus, His Kingdom, and His Righteousness. So that I don’ commit sins of the heart.
Something To Do: Pray that I continue to grow spiritually. Avoid all situations that will tempt me go in the way of the world.
