My Gatekeeper Is Me
The gatekeepers and their descendants, by their divisions, were responsible for guarding the entrance to the house of the LORD when that house was a tent.
1 Chronicles 9:23
My Takeaways
Something Old
The gatekeeper was responsible for:
- Opening the doors in the mornings and closing them at night.
- Keeping off the unclean and the things that were forbidden by the law.
- Directing and introducing those that came to worship.
My question was answered after I read the complete job description of the gatekeeper. What about the gatekeeper to my temple? I am the gatekeeper to my temple. Oh, this gives me holy goose bumps and makes my heart race. My job is to guard the exclusive gate of the King. It is my responsibility to:
- Open and close the doors in the morning and night. Joshua 1:8
- Keep off the unclean and things forbidden by the law.
- Direct and introduce worship in the temple.
Something New
The gatekeepers were Levites, who were the priesthood. We keep/guard the gates to our heart.
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (NIV) 1 Peter 2:9
Something to Do
Be a trusted gatekeeper.
Something to do
Guard my temple that I may honor God.
1 Chron 9:1 “the people were exiled to Babylon because they were unfaithful to the lord.” Where have I been unfaithful to the lord and how might I be experiencing exile? When I neglect god’s word and do not obey I miss out on intimacy with him.
I am the gatekeeper of my heart – God’s Temple. Am I guarding it 24/7? Am I reliable and vigilant?
My Takeaways: The Gatekeepers
Something Old: 1 Chronicles 9:18, 19 “These men served as gatekeepers… Shallum was the son of Kore, a descendant of Abiasaph from the clan of Korah.” Remember Korah? He was the guy that was swallowed up with the other rebellious men in challenging the right of Moses and Aaron to the pristhood. The earth split open and these people fell in. So this was definitely the end of Korah and his associates. Korah’s sons were spared. From that same clan comes the ones serving as gatekeepers! This reminds me of how gracious and kind the Lord is. He does not hold grudges against the children of those who have sinned against Him. The service of the sons of Korah is a perfect example of the mercy of God.
Something New: Just like God used Korah’s clan he can us me to do His work, a sinner with a checkered past, with many flaws and failures. Praise God that He does not hold grudges, but in His mercy, He uses imperfect people to do His work. I want to be a faithful gatekeeper and do the work God has planned for me.
Loved your insights about Korah and how God uses us even in our sinful state! Thank you for sharing!!
Thanks for the reminder about Korah! Not sure I would have recalled that, but you’ve made a beautiful connection there.
