His Word-My Hope
Joyful are those who obey His laws and search for Him with all their hearts.
Psalm 119:2
My Takeaways
Something Old
His Word brings:
- Life (Psalm 119:25, 37, 93)
- Encouragement (Psalm 119:28)
- Comfort (Psalm 119:52)
- Hope (Psalm 119:81)
- Wisdom (Psalm 119:98)
- Guidance/light (Psalm 119:105)
- Joy (Psalm 119:143)
Something New
The references of discipline were very refreshing to me. I receive discipline because I am loved. His judgments are fair and help me walk more closely to Him.
Psalm 119:67, 71, 75
Something to Do
Pray to be a lover of the Word like the psalmist of Psalm 119. Pray to…
“Those who love your instructions have great peace and do not stumble.” (Psalm 119:165)
Great Reference for Psalm 119.
Wow-what a comfort it brought me to hear Wendy talk about feeling immature in the Word! I have not felt like the Psalmist who says he felt like one who discovers a great treasure. I know people who are absolutely in love with the word and I have not felt that. Just being honest.
Verse 5-oh that my actions would consistently reflect your decrees-this one confirmed something the Lord has been speaking to me. I’ve always tried to bring God’s word into alignment with my life, my emotions, my circumstances-when I should be bringing my life, my emotions and my circumstances into alignment with God‘s word. This isn’t something that I can do but his spirit Does in me. It’s imperative that I know God’s word in order to know how to live. And I need to remember that I have already been given understanding, knowledge and wisdom through Holy Spirit. He teaches me his decrees he encourages me and he expands my understanding.
Oh how I want to fall in love with him in his word appreciate prayers for this. Bless you all and bless this community
Mary, thank you for your honesty!! I had similar feelings the first time I read the whole Bible, especially the Old Testament! I often felt overwhelmed and confused even though I had heard scripture my whole life. (And like Wendy, I was sometimes counting the pages or reading just to check it off my list.) I kept plugging away and talking to God about it and now I seem to have developed a real desire to read God’s word (or rather God has created this in me!) I actually long for it and I want to learn more and more. My bible study time has become such an important part of each day. I will pray that this will happen for you as you’ve asked. I wish you well!
I count pages as well. Especially this morning! Thank you for sharing Darena It always helps to know I’m not alone. You have given me hope.
I LOVE your heart Mary!
There is so much in Psalm 119! I love the verses of encouragement, comfort, and light. My 3 favorites today are:
Verse 105 – “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” Love the Amy Grant song from some years back and it is always fun to find the verses that some of my favorite songs or hymns are based on.
Verse 114 – “You are my refuge and my shield; your word is my source of hope.”
Verse 143 – “As pressure and stress bear down on me, I find joy in your commands. Your laws are always right; help me to understand them so I may live.”
I also find the literary style of the acrostic poem interesting. I wonder if it was written by one person or many different people.
I LOVE your heart Mary!
Darena, I too found the literary style interesting. Some think this Psalm could have been written by Ezra after the temple was rebuilt. Also I’ve heard that this style of writing made it easier for the people in that day to memorize. Since most people at that time did not have their own personal Bibles like us, they relied on their memory of Scripture so they could pass the word onto the next generation.
Thanks for sharing that bit of info with me. I enjoy learning about the history in addition to the Biblical truths.
My Takeaways: Fall in Love with God’s Word
Something Old: Well yesterday I read the shortest chapter in the Bible and today I am reading the longest chapter in the Bible, what a contrast! I love this Psalm. This Psalm is a beautiful meditation on God’s Word and how it helps us stay pure and grow in faith. Almost every verse in this Psalm mentions God’s Word, the only sure guide for living a pure life.
Something New: This entire Psalm says so much that my comments could be as long as the Psalm itself, but I’ll keep it short 🙂 “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path” (Ps. 119:105). Life is dark without God. C. S. Lewis said, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the Sun has risen, not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” Scripture is the lens through which I am introduced to God, my origins, my fall, and His redemption of humanity through His Son Jesus Christ. Scripture lights my way in an otherwise dark world of people who think they see clearly, but are clearly blind.
Something To Do: Ask the LORD to grant me a hearty appetite for the Word that equals that of the writer of this psalm.
