The Power Of Will

In that day…
Amos 9:11a

My Takeaways

Something to Old

On the heels of yesterday’s lesson where God begged us to

  • Begged us to Come back to me and live! (Amos 5:4)
  • Assured us that He knows the vast number of our sins and the depths of our rebellion. (Amos 5:12)
  • Encouraged us to do what is good and to run from evil so we may live. (Amos 5:14)

When we do our part, God will do His.

Amos 9:11-12

In that day- our day of return, confession, repentance, devastation, in that day when we are left in the aftermath of our sin feeling ruined and damaged He says to us…

  • I will restore. (rise up, help stand)
  • I will repair. (to close up walls) Walls are the protection of the city. God will be our protection.
  • I will rebuild. (to restore to a good or sound condition after decay or damage; mend, strengthen)

  1. My Takeaways: God Desires the Best From Me

Something Old: So we wrap up Amos today. This book has been a great reminder for me to live faithfully according to God’s desires. I loved chapter 7 verses 3 and 6 “…the Lord relented. from this plan. I will not do it…” The power of prayer was powerful in Amos’ days as it is today. God answers prayers! If I want a change in this nation, I must remember to pray. God hears my prayers and listens. Prayers are very influential, after all they changed God’s mind. Now that’s a powerful prayer!

Something New: “…Not a famine of bread or water but of hearing the words of the Lord” (Amos 8:11). The people didnt care what God had to say. King Amaziah sent him back to Judah instead of listening to what he had to say and changing his ways. How sad for all of Israel. Many scholars believe this prophecy relates to the 400 years of silence between the Old and New Testaments. I found that to be interesting. “… I saw the Lord standing beside a wall that had been built using a plumb line. He was using a plumb line to see if it was still straight.” (Amos 7:7) A plumb line is a weight on the end of a string that builders use to measure the straightness of a wall. Here is an other interesting fact that was new to me—When God’s Word was being collected and made into a book the church fathers chose to call the book the “Canon,” which is Greek for “plumb line.” With that said, I can think of the Bible (Canon) as my plumb line, it allows me to measure up, keeping my steps on the straight and narrow path. My plumb line (the Bible) allows me to see my sin and know God’s nature and character. It is my guide to help filter and discern truth from error, to gauge godly wisdom from worldly foolishness.
I can praise God that I don’t live in a famine of hearing God’s Word. I have access to His wisdom at all time. So now I must ask myself, how is my life measuring up to the plumb line of God’s Word? Am I following the Lord’s instructions and walking the straight path? Ignoring this plumb line led to Israel’s downfall. I can’t let that happen to me.

Something To Do: Keep my plumb line straight so I can always read it, hear it and never collapse. Never forget the power of a prayer.
