A Word or Two About Obedience

But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord.
Jonah 1:3a

My Takeaways

Something Old

  • Disobedience takes you away from God-in the opposite direction. (Jonah 1:3)
  • You can rest assure disobedience is not the best way to start your day.
    (Jonah 1:2-3)
  • Nothing stops a storm caused by disobedience like confession. (Jonah 1:15)
  • Confession of our disobedience does not exempt us from a good lesson arranged by God. (Jonah 1:17)
  • Disobedience once does not disqualify us from future opportunities to obey. (Jonah 3:1-3)

Something New

Embracing my assignments invites and ignites the power of God to move in my life.

Something to Do

Obey. Just obey.

  1. I love reading the chronological Bible and understanding the time period when events like the story of Jonah took place.

After his ordeal with the storm and the whale, Jonah finally goes to Nineveh to deliver God’s message. This time of reading this old story, I focused on the fact that Jonah was upset when God was merciful to the people of Nineveh and did not destroy the city. Jonah was angry (and probably embarrassed) that his prediction didn’t come true.

The lesson here for me was about judgement, as well as obedience. It was not up to Jonah to decide the fate of the people of Nineveh, but only to obey and deliver the message.
Hard to admit, but sometimes I think things like, “Well they’ll get theirs! Wait and see!”
I need to remember it’s not my place to judge regardless of the choices and behaviors of others. It is my job to obey God and share His message and His light.

As Wendy said, we are not responsible for the outcome. We are responsible to obey God. My prayer is that I can discern exactly what God is asking me to do and obey.

  2. My Takeaways: God’s Purpose

Something Old: Don’t you just love the story of Jonah? What a beautiful story of God’s mighty mercy and grace! Darena you are so right, how many times have I been disappointed when someone is not punished as I think they should be. I expect God’s grace in my life but not necessarily in the lives of others. God’s plan of salvation extends to all people on the earth. As the apostle Paul states, “God desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4). The gospel isn’t just for me. The gospel is for all who will repent and believe.

Something New: King Uzziah did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight, “as long as the king sought the Lord, God gave him success” (2 Chronicles 26:5).
But when he had become powerful, he also became prideful, which led to his downfall. He forgot that God was the reason for his success. He became thankless and thought he was above the law. “Pride goes before destruction.” – Proverbs 16:18

Something To Do: Obey, worship and honor God. Don’t let my pride get in the way of doing what is right. Share the gospel to everyone that will listen.
