When Something Good Goes Wrong

“He led them to Baalah of Judah to bring back the Ark of God, which bears the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, who is enthroned between the cherubim.”
2 Samuel 6:2

My Takeaways

Something Old

“…the original inhabitants of the land who were living there.” 2 Samuel 5:6

David was fighting against people who should have been wiped out when the Israelites came to the Promised Land.

Something New

Things to think about before I do something good for God:

  • Have I even discussed the situation with God?
  • Have I checked my motives?
  • Have I received His OK or am I proceeding on a feeling or instruction?
  • If number 3 is “yes”, am I following His exact instructions?

If we aren’t careful, our zeal to do something good for God can easily surpass the patience needed to discern its leading.

Something to Do

Just because it feels good does not mean it is good.

  1. My Takeaways: Careful, remember what is holy and keep it holy.

Something Old: I found it interesting that David begin his reign at 30. Just like Jesus begin his ministry at 30. I also found it interesting that he reign for 40 years. 40 is such an important number in the Bible. Moses wandered in the wilderness for 40 years, Noah and the flood – 40 days and 40 nights- Jesus in the wilderness for 40 days. I could go on and on. Why is 40 so important, what is the significance?

Something New: I’m thinking about the way that the Ark of the Covenant was handled. David was doing so well asking for God”s help through all the battles, but then when it came to the Ark of the Covenant he decide to bring it back on his own – he forgot to seek God’s advice first. It was a shame that Uzzah did not handle carrying the Ark of the Covenant the proper way. I don’t ever recall the Lord saying it was okay to put it on a cart. Was he a Levite? Sometimes I think we get so comfortable at where we are we forget the holiness of the situation. It’s kind of like when I partake in the Lord’s Supper. I sometimes take it out of routine – without thinking about the real meaning. I think this is what happened with the Ark of the Covenant. God had to remind them the importance of being obedient to him and the holiness of the situation.

Something To Do: Always go to God first even when I think it is not necessary. Remember the importance of obedience. Don’t make something holy become a simple ritual, make it memorable and meaningful! Remember the reasons behind it. When I partake in the Lord’s supper I must not take it for granted. It is to be an expression of gratitude and praise for forgiveness and salvation. It is much more than a ritual!

    1. Lkennedy, thank you for faithfully sharing your thoughts with us. I enjoy reading and learning from your posts. I, too, was curious about the significance of the number 40 in the Bible. I read on several sites, one being gotquestions.org, that forty can represent a generation, a time of trial, a number like “umpteen”, or simply straightforward 40. Lots of meanings and interpretations for numbers…The good news is that whatever the exact meaning of the number, we can always count on the truth in God’s word. Glad to be studying along with you!
