Good Truths From A Future King

God has surely handed your enemy over to you this time!” Abishai whispered to David. “Let me pin him to the ground with one thrust of the spear; I won’t need to strike twice!  1 Samuel 26:8

My Takeaways

Something Old

David spares Saul again, and was willing to accept God’s plan even if it meant Saul would be against him.

Handling Revenge

  • Don’t allow the temptation of revenge to overtake me. Trust God to avenge my pain and suffering. (26:10)
  • We can trust God to protect us when we are gracious to our enemy. (26:19)
  • God’s plan is the best even if it doesn’t make sense or might mean trouble for me. (26:23)
  • God’s plan for our lives sometimes includes adversity and trials. He uses these to shape our character into His likeness. (26:24) Wow, this resembles the humility of Jesus when He turned himself over to the authorities.

Something New

David gave way to his discouragement and “thought to himself” (1 Samuel 27:1) it was best to live with the enemy. I get into so much trouble when I think and act before seeking God.

Something to Do

Don’t think and act… seek and listen.

  1. My Takeaways: Great lesson Wendy! I may not know why, but like David , I must respect the positions and roles to those that God has put into authority.

Something Old: David had great faith in God’s plan and timing. As long as God wanted Saul to be king, David would wait. He would not take matters into his own hands.

Something New: Not once do we see God scolding David through these learning years.

Something To Do: Always put God’s commands first. Work for righteousness while trusting God. Always do God honoring ways, especially when I want to make a point. I must always remember that knowing what is right and condemning what is wrong do not take the place of doing what is right.
