Finish The Work
But they failed to drive out the people living in the plains, who had iron chariots.
Judges 1:19b
My Takeaways
Something Old
The failed, not because of a lack of military weakness, but of spiritual weakness.
They failed because of disobedience. They didn’t truly trust. They saw the opposition and faced the force of the enemy, and caved under the pressure.
Something New
The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out, so that you can endure. 1 Corinthians 10:13
But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world. 1 John 4:4
Something to Do
Victory is mine…finish the Work.
My Takeaways: So I am leaving the book of Joshua behind. What a man of God he was. Faithful and obedient to the end! I can’t believe I’m ready to start a new book already, the book of Judges. Time does fly when you’re having fun. I must admit I’m having the time of my life reading through the word with Wendy and you. I’m ready – today – to unpack the lessons that will be revealed to me in Judges. So much in store for me.
Something Old: Judges 2:10 “After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the Lord or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel.” Israel starts the downward spiral of not knowing God. Each generation has a responsibility to share the gospel to their generation. Israel was good as long as they had a godly judge leading them back to God, as soon as he died, they quickly forgot about the one true God. But it wasn’t the judges responsiblity to keep each individual on the straight path. Each family had a responsibility to teach their children by words and actions. Not relying on the power of someone else. Though God was merciful to them by giving them judges that would get them back on track it was ultimately each families responsiblity to make sure their family loved and obeyed God. The Israelites were failing badly in this area. So their sinful life continued.
Something New: Judges 3:15 “But when the people of Israel cried out to the Lord for help, the Lord again raised up a rescuer to save them…” God is always merciful. Ehud made a difference. He was cunning and had much courage. Israel was willing to follow their new judge again. The Lord is amazing he allowed Judge Ehud one man to make a difference, and because of his courage (actions) they were able to follow his lead and do what was right in the sight of the Lord.
Something To Do: Share my faith with my family. Remind them daily of what Jesus Christ has done. Show by my actions that I stand on these truths. Make a difference in the life’s of others, be the one that turns people away from the world and toward the things of heaven. Colossians 3:2
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
Your comment is awesome!! Thank you for sharing.
LKennedy, Judges 2:10 is exactly the verse that God pointed me to today! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with everyone. These verses from Judges surely remind me that it is still my responsibility to live the gospel and teach my family by my words, actions, and examples. I can still have an impact on my adult children and grandchildren. It is an honor and a pleasure to share God’s love with all extended family. I also have the blessing of being a church preschool director so I can share my faith and God’s love with my preschool “family” too! If we all share our faith, think of the great joy God can bring through us to so many.
