The Refuge of Restrictions

The LORD said to Moses, “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel.”
Leviticus 12:1-2a

My Takeaways

Something Old

God sets rules in place, not to restrict, but to protect.

Something New

The whole idea of these instructions was to purify those who were sick and to protect the people who were not.

Purification:

  • May require sacrifice. (Leviticus 12:8)
  • May require isolation. (Child birth and skin diseases)
  • May take time. (Leviticus 12:4-5, 14:10)
  • Should be followed by celebration

Something to Do

Trust God with my purification and its timing.

  1. My Takeaways: God sure did love His people. He took so much time in teaching them directions in living as a holy nation in fellowship with a holy God. He still loves that much today. That’s why he sent his son.

Something Old: Levitics 12:3 “On the 8th day the boys foreskin must be circumcised.” I always found this interesting. When I was going to college, I was a receptionist for a doctor. He told me that the eighth day is the best time for circumcision. Before the 8th day blood does not clot as well, and after it, sensitivity to pain becomes greater. I’ve never forgotten that. Thats just one small example to show me the wonder of God. Isn’t He wonderful! He always sorts out the details perfectly. We do have an amazing God! Following his ways are always best. Leviticus is a wonderful book. Every day when I read it I see Jesus.

    Something New:
Two chapters devoted to leprosy. I think it must have been very important so I did some research. If you want to read more about Leprosy and how it compares to sin google – Parallels Between Leprosy And Sin, By Rick Railston. I found it interesting and it made this section much easier to grasp. Leprosy is a vivid and graphic physical picture of the spiritual defilement of sin. Sin is ugly, loathsome, incurable, and contaminating; it separates men from God and makes them outcasts. The instructions given to the priests in Leviticus 13 help me understand the nature of sin: Sin is inside me, deeper than the skin (Leviticus 13:3); sin also spreads (Leviticus 13:8); sin always defiles and isolates (Leviticus 13:45-46); and just as leprous garments are fit only for the fire (Leviticus 13:52-57), so those who die clothed in sin will burn forever. If only sin were feared as much as leprosy!

    Something To Do:
The wisdom of God’s laws hold true today. Even though I may not understand everything written in the Bible, I should follow and live the way that Christ would want me to. Follow Jesus.
