The Articles Of The Tabernacle

And so at last the Tabernacle was finished. The Israelite had done everything just as the LORD had commanded.
Exodus 39:32

My Takeaways

Something Old

“Just as the LORD commanded” (or something similar) are repeated at least 19 times in Exodus 36-40.

Something New

  • The table of showbread is put in the Holy Place. Bread of Presence (Showbread/Shewbread) served as a memorial food offering to the Lord. The bread could only be eaten by Aaron and his sons in a holy place and was set out every Sabbath

He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.” Luke 22:19

And gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 1 Corinthians 11:24

  • The lampstand is put in the Holy Place. The lampstand was made in one piece and has seven lights, the number of completion. We are one with and are complete in Christ.

Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5

  • The golden altar of incense is put in the Holy Place. The altar is always burning and the smoke from the incense represent the sweet smelling fragrance of our continual prayers to God.

Never stop praying. 1 Thessalonians 5:17

  • The Curtain separating the holy place. Only the priests went behind the curtain. Once a year, the priest entered the Holy of Holies to make the annual atonement for the sin of the people.

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9

We can approach the throne of grace.

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. Hebrews 4:16

  • The brazen altar is put in its place. The altar was situated on a mound of earth and set before the Holy of Holies.  We are to deal with our sin before we approach our Holy God.

But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 1 John 1:9

  • The laver for washing is put in between the altar and the tent. The priests washed their hands before they offered the sacrifice. This set them apart and prepared them for service.

Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God. 2 Corinthians 7:1

Something to Do

Praise the Lord for the sacrificial system that He fulfilled.

  1. Happy Valentine”s Day to Everyone!

    My Takeaways:
Think of the excitement the Israelite must of felt at this time. All their hard work, now they were going to actually set up the tent, viewing the final product for the first time. How awesome it must of been.

    Something Old:
The tabernacle is completed and the glory of God descends upon it.

Something New: As I reflect back to the beginning of Exodus and compare it to the place we have come to today in our reading I see quite the contrast. Exodus starts out very depressing. Remember the Israelite were slaves in a land where they were not wanted. They committed a great sin when they made that golden calf, but God’s presence was with Israel, despite it all.The Book of Exodus ends with great hope, trusting in God and His glory.. How wonderful! See the connection- Christians start their journey in the same way, slaves to sin, redeemed by God, and end the journey by living with God forever. Our journey too is long, it takes a lifetime for us to get where we are going. The Israelites had the gracious God hovering protectively over his people. Christians today have the holy spirit in their lives. It doesn’t get much better then that!

    Something To Do:
    Learn from the Israelites.
