In the Shadow of Your Wings
The cherubim faced each other and looked down on the atonement cover. With their wings spread above it, they protected it.
Exodus 37:9
My Takeaways
Something Old
When reading through the grandeur and awe of the Ark and Tabernacle, sometimes it’s hard to believe we now have access, through Jesus, to the presence of God. Pause to allow that reality to sink in. While the cherubim covered the mercy seat, God covers us. We rest in His shelter.
Something New
Guard me as you would guard your own eyes. Hide me in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 17:8
How precious is your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 36:7
Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by. Psalm 57:1
Because you are my helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 63:7
Something to Do
Seek my right place of refuge.
My Takeaways:
I often wonder how long it took to build the tabernacle. I’ve heard around 9 months. How dedicated the people were. I don’t think it was a coincidence that God spoke so often of remembering the Sabbath before he set them lose in building. I wish the tabernacle was still around. Imagine the beauty of it all. What a piece of work, totally amazing! I wonder where it is today? Do you think it just got old and worn out?
Something Old:
The Ark of the Covenant was built to hold the 10 commandments. It symbolized God’s covenant with His people. The cherubim was on top. The Ark was sacred and kept in the Most Holy Place in the Tabernacle. Once a year the top was sprinkled with blood to atone to the sins of the entire nation. Jesus took care of this once and for all at the cross. It’s hard to grasp what he did for us.
Something New:
“Moses did everything just as the LORD commanded him.” In chapters 35-39, the people were obedient in the building of the Tabernacle parts. Obedience prepared the way for God’s presence to be among His people. The people and Moses’ obedience opened the door for God to dwell in their midst. When the Israelites obeyed, God came to dwell among them.To remain in Christ, to love Jesus, is to obey Jesus. Living in obedience to Jesus opens us up to the abiding presence of Jesus and the Father. When we obey the Son, the Father and Son dwell in our midst. Through receiving the forgiveness of the Father with a response of obedience we can know the “tabernacle-ing” of God in our lives.
Something To Do:
Trust and Obey
“If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him” (John 14:23).
“Remain in me and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me” (John15:4).
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love” (John15:9-10).
Dear Wendy,
Just a short note to thank you for consistently and accurately interpreting the Word of God into simple, understandable truths applicable to us today. Thank you!
Thank you Wendy for knowing some of these recent reading have been difficult to get through with all the technical aspects. But each time you find the lesson we need to learn from each day’s passages. I too am awed by how the tabernacle must have been – it’s hard for me to visualize it – but I have an inkling of it. Would love to be able to see it in real life.
