The Sound of Silence

My Takeaways

Something Old

I might not be hearing from God because my mouth keeps moving.

Something New

It’s often in the silence that God is the loudest. It’s often in the silence that the enemy is most aggressive.

  • Be OK with silence. Sitting still and being quiet is good for the soul.
  • Be diligent in my quiet times. Don’t let the enemy run me off.
  • Be humble, not haughty. Face whatever God brings up.
  • Be aggressive with the enemy. Stay grounded in the Word; it’s my weapon

  1. My Takeaways: Job is tired of listening to his friends. Their advice is worthless. He has had enough.

    Something Old:
Job and his friends have no ideal that God and Satin do in fact view Job as “blameles and upright.”

    Something New:
Job seems to understand that there is more to life then what we are experiencing here. He has great faith. He wants to understand.

    Something To Do:
Remember that God is God and he can do whatever he wants but for those of us who have faith great things await us. I can’t give up. I must understand that God knows all and he will turn all to good at the end I just have to hang in there and trust and obey.

I’ve got to be honest here- I am confused. This book is hard for me to write notes on. I hope my thoughts make sense.

  2. Most of us read Job initially with the hope of getting answers to our own question of suffering. The awful AND wonderful thing about this book is that it does not answer that. I don’t think it is supposed to no matter how much we wish it would. The reality is that this world we live in is not designed (at present) to prevent suffering. Yet God is a good God and He will make all things right some day. Meanwhile, He cares deeply about us and our situation in this life.

    Something Old
No matter how bad it got, Job did not give up on God, but he did have to alter his limited understanding of God. He sought to go directly to God and argue his case. (Job 13:3). This reminds me of Jacob wrestling with God and refusing to let him go until he blessed him. Both seemed honest, sincere and unwilling to relent until they felt God had heard them and satisfied their deepest need….again, the need was not so much knowing, but being known and cared about.

    Something New
Job did not give up on proclaiming his innocence. Sometimes there is so much debate that we can be tempted to simply want Job to cave in and “admit it”, but in this year’s reading it became clearer to me that he continued to protest not out of arrogance or stubbornness, but out of truth. (God himself affirmed this fact both in the prologue and epilogue.)

    Something To Do
Be bold in my communication with God. He knows my heart and hears my need. He values my honesty tempered with reverence.
