Wait. What?

“Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.” Genesis. 22:1NLT

Wait a minute! Stop the madness! Did God ask Abraham to give up his son? The son He promised all nations would come through? Yes, that’s correct. Talk about a test of faith. This is a test I’d surely fail. I would definitely have to clean my ears, ask God to repeat, and then offer Him Plan B. Abraham’s response is a demonstration of his faith in God and God’s plan.

“The next morning Abraham got up early. He saddled his donkey and took two of his servants with him, along with his son, Isaac. Then he chopped wood for a fire for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had told him about.”(v. 3)

Abraham does not hesitate to head out the following day, nor does he question God. He also doesn’t tell Sarah. Oh boy, would she have had a thing or two to say about the situation. After a while on their journey, he tells the servants to stay back while he and the boy go to worship.  Look at these pivotal words of faith in the Lord, “… and then we will come right back.” (v.5)

Abraham’s faith is strong! He trusts that God’s promise of blessing will come through Isaac. He doesn’t know how it will work out, but he has no doubt that God will keep His word because Abraham knows God and His character.

Sometimes God asks us to give up what we treasure for a greater blessing. Doing so is often difficult, especially when we aren’t privy to the specifics of God’s end game. Like Abraham, we don’t have to know the whole plan—we just have to know God. How much stronger would our faith be if we committed ourselves to really know God?
