TGFABT – Psalm 51

When Nathan Comes to Call

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”
Psalm 51:10

Ask for mercy and purification

Have mercy on me

Cleanse me (2,7)

Let me hear joy and gladness

Admit and agree with God concerning our sin (3-5)

True confession and repentance:
A change of mind, leading to a change of heart, that results in a change of behavior.

Invite God to create and renew in you

He prays for a heart that would

  • be firm in the purposes of virtue
  • not yield to temptation
  • carry out holy resolutions
  • be steadfast in the service of God

Then we teach others what we have learned (v13)

David learned that the human heart is changed only by a divine agency. ~ Barnes

Psalm 51

Truth Tuesday

Journal: What is truth is God teaching your truth Psalm 51?

If I want a new heart I can ask for one. Create in me oh Lord…fashion, shape, and repair

Word Study Wednesday

“Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.” Psalm 51:12

Wow! I love the power of this verse! Notice the joy David wants returned is God’s joy not his own. (Joy of “thy” salvation.) Notice the joy of God’s salvation includes laughter. Oh how I love to laugh and to laugh with the Lord. David  knows he needs a ready and consenting spirit.

Restore [return back] to me the joy [gladness, exultation, rejoicing, laughter] of your salvation [deliverance, rescue, safety, and welfare] and grant [establish, uphold] me a willing [cheerful, consenting, ready] spirit to sustain me.

Can we ask for the same thing?

Thankful Thursday
