A SpotLight Verse
I remember the speaker recited scripture then told us it was her life verse. Life verse? What is a life verse and where do you get one?
In meeting with privately I learned a life verse is simply a verse that resonates with what you believe your life’s purpose is. You simply pray, read the Word, and listen for the Spirit’s whisper. Since I wanted a life verse I begin to pray, read, and listen.
Shortly after committing my life to ministry I heard the whisper as I read Acts 20:24, “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.” I was so excited!!! I had a life verse!! I wasn’t expecting to hear another whisper about another verse but I did.
I hear a whisper toward the conclusion of every year. In the whisper God indicates the verse He wants me to pay special attention to during the upcoming New Year. I call this verse my spotLight verse because His Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path (Psalm 119:105) and Jesus is the Light of the world (John 8:12).
The spotLight verse doesn’t supersede or negate my life verse. Just as a spotlight calls attention to something, a spotLight verse (a term I created) is God calling attention to, with His Light, an area of my life that needs strengthening and sharpening.
This year’s whisper came November 28th. My spotLight verse 2014 is:
“We [I] can say with confidence and a clear conscience that we have lived with a God-given holiness and sincerity in all our dealings. We [I] have depended on God’s grace, not on our own human wisdom. That is how we [I] have conducted ourselves before the world, and especially toward you [all].” 2 Corinthians 1:12 NLT (Emphasis mine)
I don’t know what 2014 has in store for me but I know that God is preparing me for it with this verse.
Have you considered asking for a life or spotLight verse? Pray, read His Word, and listen for the whisper.
Awesome Wendy! I intend to start praying for my spotLight verse today!
This really spoke to me today….thanks and praise to God for how He speaks thru others to speak to us.
I love the idea of having a spotlight verse in addition to a life verse. After reading your post and praying for a verse the Lord gave me 2 Corinthians 4:16-18. I am calling these my focus verses for 2014.
This spoke to me also and as I was praying about my life verse the next day, God immediately put in my spirit Romans 12:1-2. Then the next day as I was reading He gave me Phil 2:3-4 for my spotlight verse. Thanks Wendy for Sharing!
