A Perspective Changer

Last year our family moved.  The house isn’t fancy, just a simple house that sits at the end of a quiet road in the back of a quiet cove on a lake which doesn’t allow boats with motors bigger than 35hp.

One of my favorite things about living here is the water. It echoes the peace I need to start my day, keeps me motivated to persevere, and grounds me when I become anxious.

Today I noticed the current carrying lines of leaves to the shore reminding that fall has arrived. My breath forming on the winter told me winter is right on its heel.

As I stared at the sun-kissed current I thought, “Why does the water look cold in the winter and refreshing in the summer?

The change of season hadn’t modified the appearance of the water. The brightness of the sun had not changed. The current still flowed into our cove. I stand at the same window and look at the same water.

Given all these constants, what changed? Why did the water now look cold but only a few months before look refreshing?

My perspective.

Today, I looked at the water through the lens of truth. Winter is approaching. Winter is cold. The thermometer told me it was 36 degrees.

Truth is a perspective changer.

What is our standard of truth? The news? Our feelings? The opinion of others?

News, feelings, and opinions change faster and more often than a woman changes shoes. They are not reliable. They are as fluid and moveable as the water in my cove.

Our standard for truth has to be a constant. Immovable and unchanging. I know only two things that meet this criterion: God and His Word.

Do you know it?
“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”  Isaiah 40:8

Do you know Him?
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8

You can know Him by knowing His Word. You know His Word by reading and studying it.

Make plans to do just that, get to know God through the reading and studying of His Word.

  1. YIPEE! 🙂 I’ve been waiting to see what you’re going to do for 2014.

Question, will this be new, daily teachings or links to posts from previous read-thru’s? Just wondering.

Yes…the best gift…not only to do with a friend, but such a beautiful gift to offer Jesus at His birthday celebration, a commitment to spend daily time with Him next year.

    Blessings and love,
    Joy

    1. Yes, I wondered this also… I started at the end of last February Joshua, so I’m wrapping around to that “year start”. I assume I’m still able to be accessing those videos, but do I need to re subscribe. Let me know what I need to do. Thanks Wendy!

      1. There was a video about Aug or Sept when Wendy said, it is like a book once you buy it its always yours:) LOL! Love how she puts things.

  2. Today is a cloudy, dreary looking day. It will actually be cold enough at our house (in the deep south) to have a fire in the fireplace. Most likely we will do that. But what made me appreciate your post today is that on sunny days, same temperatures, we are less likely to have a fire. My husband and I have commented on more than one occasion how odd that is but as you say it is perspective. We feel the cold and dreariness and want the warmth — in both appearance and temperature — of the fire in the fireplace on those cloudy, dreary looking days.

This past year I have begun reading a verse each morning, first thing with my first cup of coffee, and doing the “SOAP” thing with that verse (write the scripture, write observations on the scripture, apply it to my life and then pray). Even when in the midst of a Bible study, I do this first thing and it has made such a difference in my days.

I have enjoyed several of your Bible studies before and look forward to joining you again.

  3. Hi Wendy, Is there going to be a new teaching this year? I remembered back in the summer something about one and recommended NIV Real-Life Devotional Bible for Women. But I cant remember what you had said about it…

  4. I am sorry that I am so technologically challenged but I cannot seem to sign up for RTW 2014. I put RTW in my cart but It will not take my credit cards or my debit card and I just don’t know what else to try.

    Thanks for the help!

  5. I have been out of the loop and missed quite a bit of the study for RTW 2013. So as Laura says about I too cannot seem to sign up for RTW 2014. Is it now a paid for study instead of a free Online / daily email study? I have tried to access older post and it says I don’t have permission to the content. What? I thought it was emailed for free. So if you have to pay what are we paying for exactly.

    Thanks for the help!
    Emily
