Our Heritage

Holiness.

We had a lively discussion about Romans 12:1-2 in Sunday School yesterday, particularly the holy and pleasing portion of verse 1.

Romans 12:1-2
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Why should we pursue holiness?

Genesis 1:27
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

Romans 8:16-17

“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs —heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”

Holiness is our family heritage and worthy of our pursuit. We should pursue it but not be consumed with perfection. Holiness is more about the devotion of my life than perfection in my life. Holiness is our response to the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives.

When His Spirit whispers, “Don’t” then we should not. When His Spirit whispers, “Do” then we should. It is that simple. Is it easy? No. We live in a world that is easy to conform to because of its momentary satisfaction and temporary pleasures. Let’s stay responsive to His work so that we may be holy as He is holy. (1 Peter 2:16)
