Overcoming

This morning I read from one of my all time favorite devotionals, My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers. OC does -not mince words or write to the faint-at-heart, this is probably why I like him so much. He had a word or two to say about adversity today and I felt compelled to share something that hits home each time I read it.

Some of us are facing adversity now, many of have passed through adversity, and without a doubt we will each face adversity in the future.  “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

OC encourages us this morning with these words. Hold on to them now as walk through trouble, use them to praise God for what He has delivered you through, and store them away as strength when you face new adversity.

  • Christians are delivered from adversity. We are delivered in adversity.
  • God does not give us overcoming life-He gives us life as we overcome.
  • The strain of life builds our strength. Without strain, there will be no strength.
  • We can be of good cheer even when we seem defeated because victory is absurdly impossible for everyone but God. (My personal favorite.)
I prayed for you today, all of you. Take heart, He has overcome the word!!!

  1. WOW!!! Thanks for this post Wendy. I needed it right now. I get too stuck in pity pot mode sometimes!! I will remember I am delivered in adversity and as I overcome!!! I will have strength with strain and with GOD and only GOD there is victory!!! AMEN!!!!

  2. I am a saint who sometimes sins. I am the daughter of a king. And I am His friend. I am an overcomer. Wow. COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS, NAME THEM ONE BY ONE. In the midst of trouble, He knows who I am. COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS, SEE WHAT GOD HAS DONE. AMEN

  3. I read OC most everyday, when I am not delving into “1000 Gifts”. The fact that we are delivered into adversity is a gift to us. What joy I can take, even though it may be a tiny little bit, as I come to understand the Upside Down Joy of God’s Kingdom as compared to this world’s definition. My joy comes when I recognize that bit by bit I no longer dread or react to adversity as I always have, but can remember to take wisdom from God through Christ. I thank God for every Believer who has shared with me on this journey.
