What Good is God’s Word?

I absolutely LOVE Psalm 119!!

The first time I read through the Psalms and got to Psalm 119 I counted the verses…176. I was so intimated, and to be honest was not excited about reading that many verses all at one time, so I did not. I broke up the 176 verses into several days reading. This was the easiest way I could think of to get through what I believed to be a daunting task.

Never in my wildest imagination did I think Psalm 119 would become one of my favorite chapters in the entire Bible. What started as what seemed like a burden turned in a huge blessing. The beauty of God’s Word is that the blessing keeps giving.

Here’s what I discovered today as I reread Psalm 119. God’s Word is good for:

  • Sustaining me when I am weary  V92)
  • Giving me life when I feel lifeless (V93)
  • Making me wiser when life is full of questions (V98)
  • Keeping me out of trouble when life gets messy (V104) My personal favorite of the day.
  • Providing me with understanding when life demands clarity (V014)
  • Directing me my choices’s when life seems aimless (V105)
  • Imparting hope when my life seems hopeless (V114)
  • Granting me peace when life gets chaotic (V165)
  • Preventing me from stumbling when life gets bumpy (V165)

How is God’s Word good for you?

  1. God’s Word is marvelous for me – gives me comfort, lightens my heart, solves my problems unexpectedly, which I think are miracles especially when you don’t know what to do or where to go for an answer. It strengthens my faith, is helping me to ‘wait’ on the Lord because His plans are perfect – it has been proven to me.
Wendy, I going to start reading Psalm 119 – it is long, but I think your idea of reading it over several days is brilliant – that way you get the best of it.
Thank you for your devotion and of course your wonderful insight into Psalm 119.

  2. Wendy,
I read Psalm 119 at two different times, and I wrote down the verses that I felt spoke to me. I wrote down 16 of them in my journal (sent to me by little Brandee Loftis in Tenn.). After reading your list and copying it under my list, I want to go back and make applications to my daily life and struggles as you did. I learn soooooo much from you, and I am so very thankful to my God every time I remember you (which is daily)!!!! Two of my favs were 8b…”Please don’t give up on me!” ; and I desire to make v.147 real to my life.
    Loving Psalm 119 as well,

  3. PS–As I looked at v.147, I have written in my chrono. Bible for the past 4 years that this is my desire. I am up earlier to be in His word, but now I am working on the “before the sun is up”. I am praying and hoping that a newly started Prayer Notebook/Journal will help with this discipline.

  4. God’s word keeps me sane and well! Any illness has a prescription in the Bible. God’s word gives me strength when I’m weak; tissue for my tears; a band aid for my wounds; a shelter from the storm; food for hunger and water for thirst; and hope for tomorrow. His words remind me that if no one else in the world loves me, He does. I’m the apple of His eye. I’m altogether lovely to Him. His words are my midnight lullaby and my morning melody. Essentially, the word is my life.
