Real Help Awaits

A familiar and favorite Psalm to many is Psalm 121:

I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there?

My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth!

He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber.

Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps.

The LORD himself watches over you! The LORD stands beside you as your protective shade.

The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night.

The LORD keeps you from all harm and watches over your life.

The LORD keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.(NLT)

What did the psalmist see as looked up? The terrain surrounding him was mountainous. In this mountainous landscape it was not uncommon for passersby to observe pagan worshipers and all manner of pagan worship being practiced. When people were filled with fear or needed a spell to ward off an evil spirit they went to the mountains.

After learning of these practices we can hear the psalmist’s cry with a different ear. He knew what help awaited him in the mountains surrounding him. He lifted his eyes to many receiving false help from false gods, and he cries out,” I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where shall my help come?” Listen. Can you hear his plea?

When you look-up what do you see? Is there false help on the mountaintop of your horizon?

In our day, we will not see a Baal, sun priest, or moon priestess; however sisters all over the globe are accepting false hope from the false God of media influences. Whether it is from a magazine purchased in the grocery checkout line or the channel we land on as we surf to find something to watch. There is no doubt girls, we have fallen for false help. The mountaintop of media influences tell us brighter teeth, a slimmer waste-line, new hair color, or fewer lines under our eyes will help create the life we desire. What a crock of lies!!

As women of faith, let’s challenge ourselves to eliminate the false help of media influences. Today, let’s shake our fists and shout in the face our enemy, “My help comes from the LORD, Who made Heaven and Earth.” A declaration like this will infuriate our enemy. He wants to keep our attention focused and ears tuned to the false help we have previously accepted.

Real help and real hope comes when we trust the Maker of Heaven and Earth.

Rather than focusing your mind on a familiar television show find a quiet place to fill your heart by listening to praise music. Read your Bible on your lunch break and refuse to purchase a new magazine with countless ads sending your soul the wrong message of help and hope.

Real help from our real God awaits!

  1. Thanks, Wendy for reminding me my hope comes from the Lord. I needed this today. Sometimes there is so much out there that distracts me I forget this. Your encouraging words are a blessing. 🙂

  3. Wendy, I couldn’t agree more. I very rarely watch television, only children’s shows with my grandsons. I very rarely read magazines and only read the local newspaper. My precious little time is spent reading my emails from the Proverbs31 Ministries women and a few others, reading books written in faith along with OBS/ books, but most of all I treasure my reading of God’s Holy Word, my Bible. He has already given me His Good News! We need only look to Him!
