Let’s Be Honest
One of the things I thought of as I read Lysa’s words, press into God was how easy it is to not press into God. When times get tough I like to press into my favorite feel goods like dark chocolate, Dr. Pepper, my favorite discount store, and my best friend. I eventually make it to God. He is always faithful to meet me whether I go to Him first or last.
Pulling away from God makes things worse~Lysa
I tend to pull away from God because I just don’t want to take the time to honestly evaluate the situation and my emotions through the lenses of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes being mad is fun and quite honestly, I just want to stay mad. There is an energy associated with anger that propels us through the day, helping us avoid the issue. Avoidance leads to justification, giving us permission to treat others disrespectfully and with contempt.
The opposite of pulling away from God would be to face Him. Facing God or drawing near to Him in times of raw emotions is a discipline we can learn. It starts with being honest with ourselves and with God about our feelings.
God is El Roi, the God who sees. He knows when we are in the midst of raw emotions. When we are honest with God about our true feelings we aren’t telling Him something He does not already know. But what we are doing is defeating the power and loosening the stronghold the emotion has over us. The more honest we become about our emotions the closer we draw to God. The closer we draw to God the stronger and more equipped we become to handle the tough emotional times we find ourselves a part of.
James 4:8
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.”
Don’t let your feelings lead you away from God or away from His truth.~Lysa
