The Prophecy Provides: A Mighty God
This is part 3 in a series surrounding the amazing prophecy of Isaiah. He tell us about the Messiah to come:
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (9:6)
In part 2 we were introduced to the Wonderful Counselor. Today we will discuss the Mighty God that was born in the stable that cold dark night long ago. This is Mighty God who fights for us when we feel defenseless. In our language today “He’s got our back.”
I don’t know about you but I always feel like I have to defend myself, not necessarily for wrong things, although there are many of those times mind you. But sometimes when I am misunderstood. I am not sure why this is. If I miss choir…I need to defend my absence. If I did not get my Sunday School lesson read…I need to give a reason. I think we all can learn a lesson here to let it go and answer to our Sovereign God.
Then there are those times when I am completely innocent of any wrong doing. I am truly not responsible but I am being accused of something. I need to let it go, answer to my Sovereign God, and let Him defend me. Even if I never “get to be heard” I should trust that He will bring justice to the circumstance.
Oh, if we, the church, could let Him do His job what needless pain we would bear. (There’s a hymn about that, remember…Take it to the Lord in prayer.) There is a verse about it, too. (There is a verse for everything. Is there an echo on this blog?)
He will rescue the poor when they cry to him; he will help the oppressed, who have no one to defend them. Psalm 72:12
Lord, we cry out to you asking you to rescue us from our need to be our own mighty defender. We are many times oppressed by our desire to bring justice for ourselves. Help us to realize you came to be our Mighty God, our defender. Help us to let you do your job.
