Know My Name
The chief of staff renamed them with these Babylonian names:…
Daniel 1:7a
My Takeaways
Something Old
But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. (V8)
Am I determine not to defile myself with things that are not of God?
Something New
- Daniel = “God is my judge” to Belteshazzar “Bel protects his life”
- Hananiah = “God has favored” to Shadrach “royal” or “the great scribe”
- Azariah = “Jehovah has helped” to Abednego “servant of Nebo”
- Mishael = “Who is what God is” to Meshach “guest of a king”
These young men never let the name the enemy called them change their character or their calling.
I AM I WAS
Forgiven Guilty
Redeemed A Failure
Holy Shameful
Blessed Cursed
Chosen Unwanted
Blameless A Sinner
Adopted Abandoned
An Heir A Beggar
Something to Do
Know and live by my names… my real names.
This is one of my favorite old songs.
He changed my name… He changed your name.
Thank you for this lesson, Wendy. I too often listen to the false names that the enemy calls me. I need to focus more on my true names.
I loved Jeremiah’s honest complaints to the LORD (Jeremiah 20:7-18). It seems that Jeremiah didn’t necessarily want, or enjoy, being a prophet. It was a hard life and who would enjoy a “job” spreading bad news and being mocked, beaten and put in stocks because of it? But God called him to this and he was obedient and faithful to the LORD. This shows me that the things God calls me to do will not always be (and perhaps usually won’t be) necessarily enjoyable or fun – it will be hard in many instances. But the Lord gives us strength.
BEST. LESSON. EVER.
Thank you Wendy… you have no idea…..
Don’t you just love when the reading and/or lesson is spot on to where we are and what we need? Yup.
Wendy, thank you today’s lesson. Definitely one to marinate on and listen to again. Loved the song added! Here’s another song to cling to today….and everyday. ❤️

I loved “His word burns in my heart like a fire. It’s like a fire in my bones! I am worn out trying to hold it in. I can’t do it!” Jeremiah 20:9
Isn’t it interesting that throughout the book of Daniel his 3 friends are referred to by their Babylonian names, while Daniel is still referred to by his Jewish name. He wrote the book, and by golly he was not going to change his. Daniel truly remained faithful to the Lord’s will and ways. I want to be like Daniel and stay true to who God desires me to be.
