A Few Things About Peace
“I will make a covenant of peace with my people and drive away the dangerous animals from the land. Then they will be able to camp safely in the wildest places and sleep in the woods without fear.”
Ezekiel 34:25
My Takeaways
Something Old
I love the connection between Ezekiel 34:11-16 and John 10, Psalm 16 and Psalm 23.
Something New
God made a covenant of peace with His people in the OT and Jesus left of His peace when He left this earth.
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” John 14:27
A few things about peace
- The peace I need, I have; Jesus left it to me.
- The peace Jesus gave is one of no trouble and no fear.
- Rather than resting in the promise and hope of His peace, we compromise ourselves and manipulate our circumstances in an effort to find a peace that is counterfeit.
- Anything the world offers will stir up both trouble and fear in the life of a Believer, because the world’s peace contradicts everything Jesus lived and died for.
- The peace I try to manufacture will always fail to fulfill.
Something to Do
Rest in the peace He has already given me.
I loved today’s lesson. I needed the reminder that we have the peace we need inside of us-Jesus left it with us. We just need to access it.
And we can experience peace (and joy) even in the midst of worldly chaos, disappointment, and pain. We can rise above the hurt. I am going to try to remember this more often.
I also was drawn to Ezekiel 36:25-27. The commentaries say Ezekiel was referring to the law of using water to clean and purify. The people would no longer worship idols. But it also helps me understand why John the Baptist used water and then later the water and the blood of Jesus would wash away sins.
I also found it interesting that these verses refer to putting a new spirit in you. All together it seems that these verses could foreshadow the New Testament sacrament of baptism and the gift of the Holy Spirit. I love finding those connections in God’s story.
